Hi everyone firstly let me introduce myself as im new here. my name is Richard and my t.b mare is in foal or i hope still is anyway.

My mare was scanned at 17 days that was fine...
She was scanned at 36 days a heartbeat was detected everything looked fine...

she has just had a 79-80 day scan today the vet said her tone was great and she felt pregnant but all he found on the scan was a really large black area on the scanner he thought he saw legs but i didnt he thought the baby was tucked away a little and didnt want to spend too long doing the scan as not to upset my mare or baby...hes happy and feels confident she is still pregnant..

Am i right in thinking that at this 80 day mark you wouldnt normally see much of the fetus? he says the large black area was the fluid surrounding the little one about the size of a football
hes a very experienced vet so i guess i shouldnt doubt him

just wished i had seen something

Does this all sound right? he assured me the fluid was not infection

did anyone eles scan at this 80 day mark and not see much

Please any advice would be very welcome to put my mind at rest

Many thanks

I think 30 days and once the heartbeat was confirmed - that was the last scan we did. Then we crossed our fingers and toes and just waited

Below is the scan of Bandit at 30 days (he's the white blob in the black area!)

I used to go to this site as it was interesting to know how big the foal was

It is very nerve wrecking isn't it! Bandit is our first foal and I was a nervous wreck all through the pregnancy! Talk to your vet if you are still worried

My 2 were scanned at 16 days and then 30 days and that was it. However, if I'm totally honest I would also scan again later next time, as I was wondering for nearly a year whether they were in-foal or not! lol.

Thanks for the replies you guys, Im just going to sit back and keep my fingers crossed and think positive after all im not a vet and i do trust in his experience....

Good luck to everyones eles for 08

Cheers

Hiya! I think that the other thing you can do at 120 days is to have a blood test done, which is obviously less intrusive and upsetting for the mare, but does at that point confirm if she's in foal. I don't think that you can do a blood test any earlier in the pregnancy.

Good luck! We've got sooooo hooked on the process that we're on our second time around ... mad or what??!!

Mine is having a 60 day on Friday so I'll see what I can see and ask my vet a little more if I can.

Even by 60 days, though nowhere near as big as yours will be, the foetus is totally horse shaped and has nostrils, ears, eyelids, recognisable legs. It is possible for it to be tucked away, I know my mare is difficult to scan so it wouldn't surprise me.

Good luck though, hope everything is OK.

Hi i am new to the forum but thought i could let you know my mare has just been scaned at 78 days and you could see very little as there was a lot of fluid witch my vet said was because her bladder was full. hope this helps.
