I am stunned that one of the diarists on EWW gets 8hrs + tuition a week.

Fair enough they might have 6 horses but still it seems like a lot?

Do you think that people are far too overdrilled now riding? What about learning for yourself?

crikey, i'd love to be able to afford that much tuition.
if you have more than one horse in work, it would be easy to have 8 hours and still have time in between lessons to practise etc. i'd love someone there all the time to stop my bad habits in their tracks!

That is a lot, but then with 6 horses I guess its not. If they rode each one ever day for an hour that equals 42 hours riding a week so I guess 8 isnt a lot in that case!

Personally I prefer to have some time in between lessons to work on what they've said.

Oh to be able to have that number of horses and that amount of tuition time, agree with Kerrilli it would stop bad habits from forming. The other side of that is that I suspect that you would stop having to actually think for yourself and then what happens when the instructor is not there?

But weekly? not including the additional training they get from additional trainers. So probably looking at 10 hours a week.
I agree how amazing it would be but I do wonder if you become over reliant on it? How can you develop your own style? Deal with problems yourself?

I *think* I know who you're talking about.....

I'd prob quite like it if I could afford it but there is a definite danger of becoming over-trained

If someone had 8 hours tuition on different horses a week then they should turn out to be pretty good!! I think it is valuable to be able to ride often on your own in the arena etc too, you have to learn and experiment without instuction.

I would love to have the time and money to have 8 hours tuition a week!

I cant see the problem really as it prob works out about 1 1/2 hrs lesson per horse per week.

We all wouldnt think twice about having a lesson a week, just because they have more horses they as a rider have more instruction.

Ive had read the diary and wasnt that shocked by the instruction really - good luck to them!

Wow, I would absolutely love that amount of training! As to developing own style or being over-trained...I am not sure if I agree. I think you can only develop your own (Good) style once you are pretty good in what you are doing. The over-training bit - maybe, but like someone else said it only works out 1 1/2 per horse.
Also, I don't know whether there are private sessions or group trainings. If group ones than the fact that the trainer's focus isn't always on you makes you take responsibility for your riding.
If private than it depends on the trainer. I would think they have rather good ones who can and will teach autonomic riders not robots waiting for instructions.
And in the very end, all is down to the rider. If they are the 'helpless' sort when riding with a trainer/coach then I would agree that too much tuition might be counter productive.

Once again, wow at the 8 hours I really want to!

I am very jealous I wanted to go to SLM but horse has lost a shoe! Are you doing the eventers SJ as well?

The rider has this every week though not just one off while they are on half term.

Yeah i agree it is no different to a lesson a week on one horse and the rider will have different things to focus on with each horse!

I think its good that people can be commited enough to put in that much effort!

Would love it!! 8 hours not much really if you are in it full-time........full time I would say is riding minimum 3 hours a day ? x by 5-6 days a week.......... 8 hours training still gives you plenty of time to practice!!!!!!!!

I'd love 8hrs a week!!!! i look forward to my weekly lesson and i can barely afford that at £35 + £20 for the diesel.
i dont think there is a danger of being over trained, the more training you have, the more information you absorb so when you have a problem and your instructor isn't there you have already learned the skills on how to deal with it, it doesn't stop riders thinking for themselves, it just gives them more knowledge to think with, more tips to use and inevitably better riding skills to deal with any problems they face.

I havent read the dairy but am thimking that 8hrs a week isnt that much with a few horses. As for the over training bit well the rider may well be riding a whole lot more that 8hrs a week and is therefore more than able to develop their own style & practice what the trainer has said without being "over trained".
