Hi, I just received the following email about a dog needing a new home:

"Please take a moment to read this, and help out if you can. A nine year old German Shepherd Bitch has found herself in need of re-homing, through no fault of her own. When in season, she is being bullied by another bitch in the family. She cannot be sent to a rescue center as they have said she is to old and will have to be put to sleep. She is very good with children and other dogs, is very well behaved and mild mannered with no issues. Please contact asap if you could offer this lady a permanent home for the rest of her days. Currently living in the Harrogate area. A picture will hopefully
follow shortly."

If anyone things they might be able to help, please PM me and I can forward on the contact details.

Thanks.

Why not just have her spayed??????????

Precisely what I wondered? But maybe the dogs in the household simply don't get along, but at age 9 you'd wonder why she's suddenly become a problem to her family. It's sad, poor dog.

That is really disheartening, they should be rehoming the younger dog, if the other is indeed younger, and agree, she should have been spayed, Im not suprised the rescue turned her down, they will not want her stuck in a kennel environment, and they are not easy to rehome at that age, who ever takes her, could end up with a huge bill, she would be about the right age for a pyo any season shortly, and even to spay her would not be cheap

Try www.rescuehelpersunite.co.uk, they maybe of some help.

Poor bitch, agree that they should be looking to rehome the younger bitch. It might be worth trying the following rescue organisations, they might just know of someone who would take this bitch, although I agree with Cala it would be a shame for her to be stuck in a kennel waiting to be rehomed. Northern GSD Welfare - 01759 371531, or GSD Welfare - 01375 405589.

The email came from a German Shepherd breeder so I am assuming they would know or and have tried all the usual rescue and breed centres. One would hope so, anyway.

Normally I would not pass messages on like this, but I just feel it is SO unfair that a 9 year old dog has to be rehomed because of a younger dog. Of course, we don't know the circumstances, but it's so hard to believe something better than making the old dog find a new home couldn't be found.

I agree, at 9 years old anyone taking her on will be committing to inevitable vets bills. So terribly sad.

Sounding synical here but now she is over 8 yrs old puppies from her can no longer be registered. So no longer are her services required.

Sorry but I find it totally disgusting that a 9yr old dog is being turfed out.
Dogs are only in season twice a year for 3 weeks surley they can seperate them or deal with it somehow. They must of up to this point, or need to sort the other bitch out that is bullying her.

That's so sad. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that it all works out for her. A lady at our local park rescued an eight-year-old German Shepherd last year--a retired Slovakian police dog, no less--so I'll continue to be optimistic.

Exactly what I was thinking! This is what gets responsible kind breeders a bad name. Bet that poor dogs's made that cow thousands and then gets turfed out at the first sign of trouble.

It's a shame the rescues won't touch the dog. I got Indie from Bristol dogs home last year aged approx. 10 and would always go for the older ones now. She's such an angel and I feel so lucky to have her in her last years I think the rescues should promote the joys of saving batty old ladies more

That was my 1st thought too.

Just seen your reply. I didn't realise it was a breeder trying to rehome this bitch, in which case I join the cynical folks in thinking she is past her useful age and I strongly feel the breeder should be named or at least their details passed to the GSD Breed Council who have quite a good code of ethics and wouldn't be happy about this I am sure. You say the breeder has probably tried the rescues, this is possibly not the case as I know some of the rescue organisations do keep details of breeders whose dogs go into rescue and under what circumstances. Can you find out more about the exact circumstances of this bitch ?

OMG I've just realised I've deleted the email from my inbox and emptied my Deleted items.

Cant for the life of me remember the name of the site where the dog is listed. The email was from someone I'd purchased horse items from in the past and that's how they got my email address. When I clicked back on their site the dog was listed in their items for sale. I'll check back in my PC history and see if I can find the site again.

TBH, I know nothing about the circumstances of the dog only what I read in the email and which is pasted in the opening post.

Yep, going back into my History worked!

Well, since this is openly advertised on the website and I received an unsolicited email yesterday specifically asking if I could ask around on their behalf -

Here's the link to the website and page where the bitch is being advertised:

GS bitch

I've not called or emailed them, but if any of you are interested in finding out more, go ahead. I just hope the dog is able to find a good home, whatever the reason for her being made homeless. Poor animal.

I don't think it is their bitch? Their address is in Scotland and this bitch is in Harrogate and they look like they would have the facilites to cope with such a problem. They already have a number of females which may be why they can't take her on themselves.

I don't think it's theirs either, but I would expect, being GS breeders themselves, that they would have knowledge of the GS rescues and other rehoming centres to suggest the owner try first. Must admit, it is my experience too that the rescue centres will not take in older dogs. Makes PTS about the only option, unless you are very fortunate and find a charitable person willing to accept the inevitable vets costs and shortened period of time with the animal before it passes away.

That said, what's worse, a breeder wanting to rid themselves of a breeding bitch beyond her usefulness or a private home where a younger dog has been introduced and been favoured over an older one?

Maybe, though, the 9 year old GS bitch has not been in the home it is in, for very long? Most of us are assuming this dog has been with its family for years and is now being rehomed. Perhaps someone in their family or a neighbour has passed away and the people took the bitch in but have since found it is not working out with their own dog? There might be a genuine reason why this sad situation has come about so I guess we should not assume the worse until we know the facts.

I am so glad I checked that, to be honest, after I read the website and saw where their dogs were from, I was about to come on here, all guns blazing, saying 'Call the Paynes, Call the Halls, tell them what's going on!'
(Having said that, they are both big name breeders with lots of connections and I am sure could offer help and advice!)

There could be any number of reasons why this bitch needs a home. Going back a bit here, but we had two females at once, the younger one was a hateful cowbag to the old girl (MM-Juno!), we had to send her back to her breeder for a few months, it wasn't ideal but the breeder had the facilities to cope and it wasn't permanent.
