Ok, I have, at great expense had my grazing analysed and a diet plan written for my boy.

He is a tricky candidate given delicate tootsies (very sensitive to sugar and still lacking concavity... but getting there) but also his lack of energy for the work I would like to be doing with him (tires after 20 minutes of schooling or half an hours hacking) so I was looking at giving him a bit more energy... I think he has low grade shivers too, resulting in muscle tightness in his back end and supplementing vit e and selenium has helped this...

anyway, my minerals ran out before my new diet plan was ready and on reading a thread on here it was reccomended that I try D&H ERS pellets to help both his muscle problems and his energy levels... so I thought 'why not!' and after just a few days of 1kg of these a day I saw a noticable difference in him. so much more forward going but not silly and not as easily tired. he was on them for 2 otr 3 weeks and was brilliant the whole time.

Unfortunately one of the findings of my grass analysis was that my grazing is high in methionine making it dificult to balance with Zinc (which he is being supplemented with in quite high doses) and also with methionine linked to fatigue if it is present in too high a dose.... and you've guessed it, the ERS pellets are also high in Methionine so not reccomended for my horse... and it was suggested that I put him on Coolstance copra instead, which I have done (introduced slowly) and well, what can I say... he just doesn't seem the same horse... for the worse... it's only been a week and he is still on only a quarter of what I was reccomended (1kg per day) but still... he just doesn't seem to have the 'oompf' and at times I think his skin looks puffy (not full blown hives or anything glaringly obvious) and he is itchier than normal... I think. So I am seriously considering putting him back on the ERS pellets... would that be stupid of me??!

Has anyone gone against advice and still achieved the desired result? has all this forage analysis stuff kinda brainwashed us into thinking that if we go against it we will somehow harm our horses? yet we've all been feeding them 'whatever' for years, some with little negative consequence...

helpful replies only please - I've got a headache!!

Hm I think id email/ call whoever did the analysis and ask why the very thing that should make things worse has actually improved your horse. Wondering if there was a tech error somewhere?!

Yeah, I am considering doing that too... I was told that my sample threw back some quite bizzare findings - one was the large percentage of dry matter ... making them think it was hay they were testing and not grass... hurumpf...

Treat the horse, not the figures.

The research and information we have on nutrition is tenuous at best and feeding horses is more art than science.

If he was happier and felt better on the ERS pellets - then go back to them.

If he ever becomes unhappy on the ERS pellets, then review :)

I took my lad off ers pellets as my trimmer was unsure about them but tbh my lad is now a kick along boring tb so I'm also considering putting him back on a small amount for energy alone but I haven't had my forage tested

I'd go with what works best for him.

I don't understand the balancing methionine and zinc thing? Met is a sulphur containing amino acid and zinc is a mineral, never heard anyone talk about balancing them *confused*

Thank you all...

Oberon, that is what I was thinking. Since he's been on the copra he just isn't right... I cant quite put my finger on it but my gut is saying it isn't right for him...

I just found the ERS pellets so effective but quietly so... I have done some reading up and it is aparently quite hard to OD on methionine.. and he'd only be getting a relatively small amount in just 1kg per day of ERS Pellets...

thatsmygirl, I'm not sure what there is to be unsure about? They are oil and fibre with no mollasses.... I looked into them quite carefully before feeding them as my boy is so sensitive to sugar... the only thing you do have to watch is the callories but I feel I feed just the right amount for the work we currently do (3 days on 1 off of about 40 mins to an hour a time)

My lad put on weight lovely with the ers pellets as well and he's a great weight now but coming into winter with him where he will drop I might start them again. My trimmer was unsure as he couldn't find the starch/sugar level for them.

The starch level is 7% which is well published. If you want the sugar content then the easiest thing would be to ring or email Dodson & Horrell themselves.

Isn't copra 10ish % NSC- stick with the one that works! And if your horses attitude or weight changes re-address then!
Too much emphasis is placed on forage testing and mineral analysis in my opinion- The best thing for your horse's feet is lots of work and a realistic amount of forage (1.5-2% bodyweight) anything else is just fine tuning!

To be fair - I would have also been cautious when it comes to TMG's horse.

The transition to BF was very high stakes for him and TMG has said BF was his last chance before PTS. He'd tried going BF before and diet had been a stumbling block.

ERS pellets seem to be proving themselves 'safe' for barefooters and that it brilliant.....but for such high stakes, I would have wanted to stick to tried and tested feeds in the beginning and leave nothing to chance.

Now TMG's horse is doing so well and is out of danger - it should be fine to tinker with the diet of necessary :)

That's just my opinion anyway :o.

I have read the bag (inc the little white label) and can find no mention of mollasses or any other nasties and my sensitive boy was fine on them :)

The main ingredient is grass though, so there will be some sugar content even if it is 'natural' rather than added in molasses. But if he does well on it I would be tempted to stick with it - one of our horses is on it and definitely does the trick of keeping energy levels just right.

Apologies... I didn't realise that Thatsmygirls horse was such a problem case... Oberon - you rememeber soooooooo much!

I do appreciate that there will be some natural sugars in the ERS pellets and I do appreciate that forage should be the key component of my horse's diet.. it is and always has been given add lib and I am currently weighing to see how much he is getting through. he's currently eating about 10kg hay a night (thats add lib) which for an almost 700kg horse is about right... the fine tuning is the bit we struggle with!

I'll keep you posted on how we get on... Nice to know that others have found the ERS pellets to work in the energy stakes too :)
