Hello everyone,

although I've already posted several times, I didn't introduce myself ! :o

I'm from Germany, near Bonn, in Germanys well-known horse region called Wachtberg. Rodderberg, where the German Eventing Championships take place, is part of it.
My name is Mic, from Michaela, 44 years old, riding horses since I was 6 years old, now owning a 16 years old Westphalian gelding called Artos FWH (from Artwig/Argentan and Prinzess/Pit1/Pilot) chestnut coloured.
Artos is a former dressage horse up to M/S classification, but is now a leisure time horse (I don't know the correct English expression) for me.

I am here, because I want to know, where the differences are between riders and horse owners in Germany and the UK.
Last year we visited our British friends near Morpeth and I went to a stable nearby, wondering why the horses are not standing on a box full of stray !

I hope that you can overlook orthographic mistakes and/or ignore them ... ;)
... nobody is perfect, and I'll try my best ! :)

Welcome!! I go to germany lots have familly over there, i love it! Also speak a fair bit of german so if you want anything translated i can give it a go hehe.

We need to see pictures of your boy from your avatar he looks lovely!

Hallo Mic!

I agree with Ginger_Nut; we definitely need pictures! It's pretty simple: you need to have an account on a picture-hosting site such as photobucket (or your own website, if you have one), and then you paste the link to the location of your picture inside image code:

I'm another German; that is, I was born in Germany and grew up partly in Germany and partly in Canada, so sometimes, I'm a Canadian, too. In Canada, I saw very different ways of horse management side-by-side, depending on the cultural background of the people: Germans, English, and Western. Mainly, this means that I try not to take anything for granted, and to think about why we do the things we do!

I have the eponymous Spooky Pony (not his real name), who is a 14.1 bay gelding of unknown breeding, and who came to me very frightened and lacking in confidence (thence the name). I try to persuade him to be a dressage pony. He thinks he should be an eating pony.

Welcome to the forum, and tell us lots more about yourself and your horse!

definatley need some pictures of neddy nice to see some more international people on her although there is a few. I worked in Germany in 2008 with the olympic eventing team and was in bonn for the first week for training camp what a lovley area, then on to osnerbruk <cant spell it :) i love the country and plan on visiting again soon :)
get some pics up :D

@spookypony
What means 14.1 in meters ???
If one hand means 10 cm, my loony ist 17,5 hh !
Artos is the highest/biggest/largest horse in the livery, and his weight is 650 kgs, but I call him Kleiner Mann (Little Man), that makes people laugh ...
... hmmm, I don't know why ? :D

@charlie13
Aaaah, you've been in Bonn ...

Ok, so I'll try to put in the first pic now.
That was last years summer, the times with bit, nowadays I'm riding bitless, with LG-Zaum, very pop in Germany. Normally I had to take the Kimblewick, because he was soooo twirly and very close to bolt, and the Kimblewick was my "insurance" when hacking.
But the bitless thing is much better, I would never believe it without trying by myself. Much better to handle, even at full gallop.

One hand is 4 inches, and an inch is 2.54 cm, so it's a tiny bit bigger than 10cm. The Spooky Pony is just about 145 cm tall (and 147 cm long, as he will tell you himself, when he posts somewhat confused reports about my attempts to get him to "lengthen" in trot).

Wow, your "Kleiner Mann" is one big dude! He looks very powerful!

@spookypony
Aaah, thanks a lot for explaining ... :)

How long did it take to braid the mane that way ?
Looks very nice ...
I always cut his mane so it stands upright, how is it called in English ?
We call it "Stehmähne" in German ...

Another pic:
Hurry up, I'm hungry ...

I don't know what you'd call it here...if the mane is cut/shaved extremely short, it's called "hogged", which is the done thing for lots of cobs. A stand-up mane like that, we'd call a mohawk in Canada.

The Spooky Pony's look is called a "lattice" or "diamonds". It's very quick to do, because it just involves rubber bands, and no braiding. It takes me about 10 minutes to do it nicely. Often, I just do an arab plait (running plait), because that's even quicker! His mane's obviously too long for normal plaits.

Sounds funny ...
... my horse has a mohawk (mein Pferd hat einen Mohikaner) ! :D

The mane with rubber bands ?
Then I know how it is done. I will tell my livery mate, she's looking for a nice mane style without much work. ;)
Is a running plait the plait along the crest which ends at the withers ?

I just received a phone call from my saddler ...
... on Friday I will get my new baroque saddle.
Thank god I no longer have to ride in this nasty western saddle :D:D:D

I'll put in pics of my dream ...

PS
Who is able to change the threads or themes headline ?

Hello there, I'm new on here too. Also living "on the continent" here in Belgium.

I am English and I find it very interesting to see the differences between the UK and here.

There is a huge German influence here and obviously French too. But I do miss the UK spirit of "get on it, maybe fall off, get back on and don't let it stop you grinning".

I understand the language problem too, I have to learn everything in French!

Lovely horse by the way, he looks magnificent (and large). :)

@spookypony
That sound a book "1001 ways to close your shoe-laces" ... :D
Your plait is called "Andalusian plait" (Andalusischer Zopf) in Germany and it looks really great.

With Trakki-Fan you mean Trakehner-Fan ?
Artos' neighbour is a white Trakehner lady (she's a real diva :D) and her name is Maharani, called Rani. They love and hate each other at the same time, very strange. Every time I take Artos out of his box, she whickers and cries all the time until he's back. But when he's in and moves his head towards her, she starts squeaking and stamps with one front leg to the ground, these loonies ! :p
In Germany a rumour is going about that Trakehner are always crazy and dangerous most of the time. Do you know this rumour in the UK, too ?
It's the same like the descendants of Pilot (a famous Westphalian jumping horse).
Do you have rumours about other breeds ?
