A bit of a downer but it makes sense in the long run

So, I was planning on doing some intro this season on day tickets with a view to affiliating properly once we'd had a few tries. Discussed with my instructor and consensus was I'd be biting off more than I should and I'd be better off spending the summer getting my dressage and SJ 100%. I see the point, the boy either produces a fabulous test or "blows up" and we end up with shocking marks and we've not yet jumped a clear SJ at bigger than 2.9ft (always knock something down, not refusals). (XC is not a problem thankfully

Hey hum, its good advice and will save me time, money and disappointment but I'm a bit gutted that nothing new, exciting and fun is going to happen this summer.

Sorry, no real point to this, just wanted to chat about it!

Yes I agree, I registered this year and have only been to 1 event where my lad had a fit in the SJ, so I havent entered anything else yet. It is too expensive to go if you are not going to get round. Good Plan. I am spending my money on jumping lessons and trying to jump at a show once or twice a week.

Thanks Elaine (calling you fatarse seems a little rude!), it is expensive and I can spend my £££ on lots of lessons instead. At least that way when we finally do go I know I am in with a chance of doing well!

Extra time spent on the basics is never wasted.
Rushing in to BE before the horse is ready costs time in the long run, huge amounts of wasted money and can set both horse and rider back a lot more than a few months.
Your instructor talks a lot of sense

It can be a little deflating when plans dont go as expected. I try to keep the long term goal in mind but set a lot of shorter term goals that are easier to achieve and move me a step closer each time to the long term goal. Helps a lot mentally.

PS Did you get my PM re the stopwatch?

Thanks 4F - thats pretty much what I was told and besides, we can still have a fun summer training and playing at unaff so we are 100% ready before trying BE.

I've got lots of short term goals that are acheivable which should help keep me positive and the boy entertained!

(PS yes, I did, I replied this morning??)

You could always buy one ticket with a view to doing one of the last events of the season - Sept / Oct. That way you have something to aim for and work towards but you also give yourself 4 months to prepare.

Plan?

Thanks ISZ - that might be a good idea. Perhaps an ultimate aim if all the other training/unaff events go well over the summer. The annoying thing is I *know* we both have it in us but its a case of acheiving it on the day.
