A bit of a dumb question regarding jumping

I plan on starting to jump bigger then what I have been doing.
But I feel I have to start with a little x pole and work up, so obviously it takes a fair time for me to get to a decent height fence.
Do I need to start with small x fences, or have I just got that from nowhere? The only reason I start small is as a warm up fence for Roo. Not sure if this is necessary when I've worked her in on the flat before jumping.
What height do you normally start at if youre going to jump bigger?

If I've not jumped in a while then I will start with a cross pole. However if I've been doing quite a bit and she's going well I would start at around 2ft6 and work my way up. I try not to spend to much time on warming up because you want the horse to have plenty of energy if you're jumping bigger than you normally would. A lot of it comes down to how the horse feels on the day and you'll be able to judge it.

I usually warm up over fences about a foot smaller than I am ending up jumping. So if my aim is to jump 3ft 3 then I start off jumping 2ft 3 jumps and work them up in intervals. Though I guess it depends on your horse and the rider. I do it that way as I need to build up to feel confident jumping bigger, once I am more established I guess I could warm up on the flat and then go straight on to jump 3ft 3 to start.
Hope that garble helps!!! lol

Ah ok, thanks guys.
Roo would jump anything I put up, but I will need to start smaller to build up, I think next time I jump i will start at the height I ended on last week, and try and work up.
I dont know where the idea of starting with small x poles came from, may just be that I was scared of jumping

I do normally start jumping either cross poles or small uprights, of the same height as a cross pole if that makes sense

I normally end up jumping about 2ft6 at home. In my opinion, a cross pole or small jump sets a horse up for jumping because it gets them jumping on a good line and warms them up

why dont you put up a grid and then the end fence could be a bit bigger and you wouldnt notice it as much as it is part of a grid??? and the fences in the grid could get gradually bigger?? make sure the striding is correct though

I only have one jump at the moment, I am looking into making my own, so that I can do grid work and courses

That is a good idea that I hadn't thought of though, so when my fences are done I'll try that

still start with a x pole and small vertical but only do the smaller heights once or twice before you go up again, even the top sjers start small and work up its just they spend less time on the small jumps

ditto what elle said. most top sjers will do a teeny tiny x pole once or twice in the collecting ring- they just get them higher and wider quicker....
