A year ago we had two new liveries come to our yard. All was well for a while, then the care they were giving their ponies started to slip. All over winter their ponies were turned out on a quagmire with not a blade of grass in the paddock they shared, they were brought in at 9pm at night and left in a stable with just rubber mats and no hay/hayladge all night. On several occasions both of these ponies were stood in all night with no forrage from 9pm until 5pm the following day. Neither of the owners had bothered to check them. (They were sharing care between the two owners.) The YM had given them both hay and provided them with water or they would of done without on numerous occasions. The YM also gave a verbal warning to them. They were not impressed with this and started throwing straw around the barn and outside their stables. They would leave wheelbarrows full of muck in the tack room or their tool shed (which we all use) These two liveries were also putting ponies out 6am and leaving stables full of muck untill 9pm ignoring yard rules and doing what they wanted even after YM had given a verbal warning. We all have a shared paddock and look after them ourselves so were allowed to turn out all over winter aslong as we managed our paddocks which me and the other liveries always do. These two decided after having their ponies out in torrential rain, storms and hard frost and snow every day and churning up their paddock until it was just a mud bath decided they would use the paddock next to theirs as it was dry and had plenty of grass on it as myself and another livery had had our horses in thru all the wet weather and looked after it. Anyway enough had happened for the YM to give another warning and written warning. Their behaviour then got worse and they started not turning up at all, so YM said we all had to be mucked out by lunch time every day which wasnt a problem as myself and the other 5 liveries always are mucked out by lunch anyway. This was to make sure they turned up to their ponies. They carried on doing as they pleased so YM had had enough and asked one of them to leave and the other given a final warning as there wasnt much YM could do as this livery was YO's neice.

Now this livery who is still on our yard is making things difficult for the YM, she has a friend who she brings to the yard when noone is around and there has been a number of things happen to liveries and YM's horses, beds and property. There has been wheelbarrows wheels and handles broken, tyres, stable doors broken off hindges, horses bed have had buckets of water thrown over and horses manes and tails have been cut so they look rediculase with half a mane or short tail, rugs have had straps cut off and slashed so they look like they were snagged by the fence and haynet strings cut, leadrope clips and rope broken aswel. Its all been done to look like it could have been accidents and only when noone is around over a period of time. YM has now got cameras up and waiting to catch them at it. (I am friends with YM) asking for advice of who he should contact to get these silly people charged for doing this. Is it a police matter or animal welfare? TIA Lucie

Just kick them off, life’s too short to be dealing with that. If you have video evidence of them doing it then report to the police but if not it would be your word against theirs. If reporting the horses for lack of food, world horse welfare is your best bet.

Thankyou for the replies.

The problem is on live view of camera YM can see things but when going to playback to show the evidence it has disappeared. I have sat and watched a few times with YM on his phone of them filling nets outside his stable and squirting the hosepipe in his horses stable. Then the playback only shows them walking over to fill the net and then they are gone. But i have seen with my own eyes what they were doing from live view.

Myself and the other liveries have been here for around 4 years and the Neice (who is an adult) about 1 year. The YO doesnt care about the livery yard and doesnt have much to do with it and just leaves YM to run it for them as YO lives at the stables with his son.

The YM doesnt think the YO would even care TBH if he did show evidence to YO and nothing would be done about it as the neice works for the YO's company aswel.
YM cant just leave as this is his home and work place.

If the niece doesn't leave, I would leave. Yesterday. I'm sorry but no one does such bullshit to my horse or my belongings.

Sucks that the YO is like that, and that the YM is put in a xraoot and powerless position. The YO will start losing liveries I imagine. Some people just don't care and you can't make them.

I have no idea what is going on with your video stuff, but get it sorted out so it properly records and stores. Otherwise it is useless for its intended purpose, tbh.

People suck.

Ah I apologise I didn’t realise there was a Yard owner and yard manager. Regardless, it would be ‘so long’ from me. No one dare touch anything I’ve bought with my hard earned cash, and god help them if anyone done anything to my horse!

I know it’s not the ideal outcome especially if it’s someone’s job too but with everything that’s already happened, and a YO who’s not interested, I think it’s better to be out of there sooner rather than later before something really bad happens. It’s not the ideal answer especially if the yard itself suits all your needs but I’m afraid I wouldn’t be hanging around waiting for the next thing.

If there is a welfare issue then contact the Welfare Department of the British Horse Society and ask them to get their local Welfare Officer to investigate.
The yard owner is ultimately responsible for welfare issues on their yard and in the event of it being demonstrated that an animals welfare was put in jepardy they would be the ones that would be prosecuted so they can not abdicate responsibility.
