Hey guys,

Firstly, I'm pretty new to the forum so hi!

Secondly, I need a bit of advice from fellow horse lovers! I am a vet student (name says it all really) and am about to buy a horse. I have the time and everything and the money is just about do able. I am a reasonably experienced event rider and have broken in a few horses. I was planning on getting a 4 yr old to event with. But then on my sunday walk to the pub today (im a student afterall) I 'found' a horse. Or rather a horse found me. Allong the footpath we walk past a field of gypsy horses and one wandered on over to us and stood for a fuss. She was beautiful and it was love at first sight!! I usually like leggy 17hh eventers. Shes about 13.2hh and cobby! I looked in her mouth and she's about two. I'm so tempted to go and talk to the owner and see if they will sell her! I dont know why, but she's a stunner! In my head I will turn her out for a while then back her and let my neice do showing on her (she is beautifully put together). Is this crazy ? Should I just buy myself an eventer? Thoughts anyone!

Thanks

So long as you're happy with your horse and what you will be able to do with her, then why not? Having a horse is meant to be about fun and enjoying it, in whatever way works for each person and horse combination

Being a student vet you will not have a lot of time once your studying kicks in. 13.2hh - is that a bit small for an adult? Heyho, if it's you dream, you'll end up with what you initially wanted - and this other one, if your anything like me.

Gipsy vanners are stunning in their own right and there's that gorgeous gelding that the owner got for a fiver at the side of the road or something and he's doing grand prix dressage. They are easy peasy to look after too though if she has a lot of white hair/pink skin she will burn in the summer and may get odd patchy dermatitis in her white bits. Her feathers will need care too. Think mud, mites. It's karma. Buy her x

I wouldn't worry about height, 13.2 cobby is fine for an adult, and she will grow yet anyway. (state the obvious time lol)

If you are in love then go for it, as long as you won't end up resenting your lack of an eventer. She sounds like a sweetie.

Sounds like an ideal situation to me! These things happen for a reason

When I bought my yearling form a breeders yard, I initially snubbed his advert because he would be too big, and went to see his half brother. I looked at seven horses that day and I ended up with something which didn't tick any of my boxes lol!

Originally I had wanted a compact 2 year old filly, black with no markings (hate cleaning socks) which would make 15.2hh maximum. Ended up with a 10 month old coloured colt with LOTS of white on him which should make 16.1hh plus!!

I think it was fate!

Hey again!

Thanks for the welcomes!

I really do have time (was going to bring one of my event rides or buy a youngster from home up after xmas anyway.... this one can sit in a field for a while and grow up and be generally fussed over by my mother!) Its strange, I usually um and er for days about horses, but this one just wandered over and I was like 'I have to have you'! It just feels a bit spontaneous for my liking!

Thanks for the replys!

Just to add that, like Rudey, I went looking for something and came back with something completely different - twice!

Wanted a 17hh - 17.2hh four/five year old gelding, came back with a 15.2hh three year old mare.

Wanted a 17hh - 17.2hh four/five year old gelding, came home with a 16.2hh four year old mare....

Fate!

okay, awesome. Well, decision nearly made. I'm going to go and have a word with them tomorrow in my lunch hour. Now, if all goes to plan, she can stay in the field at home or alternatively (and i think i'd like to have her with me for term time) I need to find a suitable field near the nottingham/loughborough area! If anyone knows of such place, can they PM me!! Haha, that way I can have the little one here growing up and enjoying herself and I can also have one of my event rides in the vet school... perfect plan! In one term I will have gone from no horses to two!!! Love it!

Was going to say go for it but I see you are
