My friends are interested in going cubbing, one has a 6 yr old who she is bringing on, he was only broken a few months ago so a days hunting would be too much for him.

Anyway what Im wondering is, when does cubbing start and how slow/fast paced is it? she is just a bit worried her horse may be on his knees of get too stressed if the day is too long, but is keen to get him out and to let him start seeing the world!

Depends where you are and who you hunt with. Its not called cubbing anymore, its Autumn Hunting...although now its probably Early morning hound exercise or something, I struggle to keep up!
Round here (Essex) you don't do much until mid/end October and a freshly broken 6 year old with a brain would be fine! Can't speak for people in other areas.

Hound exercise has started around our way. I would say this is the best time to introduction a young horse to hounds. I would say don't say out to long about an hour, but go often and you will see after about 3 times and you'll know if your horse has the right brain to cope with things.

Thank you!
I thought cubbing/morning exercise would be an ideal start for him!

Im in the north east so where my yard is it would be the Zetland I will get their contact number, an hour or so would be great, I think my friend was thinking it was about 4 hours, a bit too much for the horse.

You can finish your morning at any point during the meet, you don't have to stay for the full duration. It is polite to bid good night to your master too before you leave (even though it could be about 0800am! )

autumn hunting or whatever we are supposed to call it by at the moment (its still called cubbing as far as im concerned) is a fantastic introduction for a young horse as the pace is quite slow with lots of breaks and not as many people out as you get in the main season.
happy hunting!

Cubbing and hunting has been the making of my daughters pony. He hunted frequently last season and has been out excercising the hounds this eason so far. The new forest start cubbing in sept at 7am, then in oct at 9am. Daughters pony is really quite racey and can be stubborn but since his first season, he won a point to point race, has been going clear XC, SJ and WH at around 3ft where hed have ran out or refused before. It certainly made him into a grown up, brave and confident 6 yr old so go for it!
