Some of you will remember me talking about my 4yr old called Socks!
Well Socks has been loaned to someone for the winter to go hunting, we didn't have the space here, and they wanted a nice young horse to take hunting!
Well they've had him about 2 months now, and while the guy who is hunting him has got the hang of him, (it took him a few days, having never really ridden young horses before) he is getting on well with him now, and enjoying his days, jumping rails and hedges etc...
But i've just come off the phone to the woman who owns the yard, and is looking after Socks, who has pretty much given me a telling off.
Firstly for the way he is schooled, ie he charges into his fences!
Well he had most the summer off on holiday, and only really started doing that when he came back in.. when i'm riding young horses, i don't like to be always telling them what to do, but to let them make their own mistakes, that way they learn for themselfs.. so yes he can tank off into his fences, but he's only 4, i'm not to bothered by that at the mo.
She also tryed to tell me that he's all wrong in his back, and that the man we sent up to do his teath is useless (who happens to be my uncle) he's done our horses teath for along time, and is used/recomended by everyone else i know round here too!

So i came off the phone feeling like i have a badly schooled, bad mouthed unsound horse! and how i really should know better!!

My pet hate in life will always be those horsey people that im sure have an aim in life to make you feel shite at riding, shite on the ground and basically a shite owner. Why they have to set out to upset you really annoys me, I would never dream of airing such things, just to make another person feel crap, and luckily most of the horsey world around me are very kind in their advice, and only criticise when asked. Im sure you know this youngster better than she does, im sure you take good care of him, and im sure he is in the best of hands. My coloured rushes into fences even now and he is 7, Im convinced I will slow him, but he will never have that showjumping canter, but what business of that to anybody but me?

WTF???!!!
She has NO right to pass judgement on your horse! Ignore her- he's yours, he's a baby as you say and for him to be out hunting so we shows he must know something and cant be completley crocked!

Exactly, but anyway, what do you want from a 4yr old that has been given to you to hunt for the season, all it is is a mode of transport!
I'm guessing that because i event, and the horse had done a BYEH class, she was expecting some highly schooled pot. Badminton horse!

well i never had any thought that Socks was going to be a smart event horse, i only bought him to do PN then sell on as a pot. JRN..
No need to make me feel like that!

WTF is the woman on?! Laugh in her face. Her problem not yours- do you really care what this woman thinks?! You can just jolly well prove her wrong when Socks goes eventing next year and has a great season, which we all know he will.

IMO it is none of the woman's business, she is paid to look after the horse not pass comments on how it is schooled etc. Sounds like the chap who has him on loan is quite happy so what is this womans problem, ignore her, she is probably jealous of the fact you have a nice young horse.

Thanks for all your comments.. just what i wanted to hear!!
I just take these things a bit personaly!!
Just means he's going to have to come out and win his first intro i guess

haha

How rude, I hope the chap who has him appreciates the chance of a keen hunter (without having to fork out about £8K)...just guessing but does SHE actually do anything competitively with her horses? Or just passes comments on other people (much easier, of course!)

Your horse has been loaned to a person on her yard. How your horse behaves under saddle is a matter between you & the person loaning the horse. It is nothing to do with the woman who owns the yard. She should stay out of things that do not concern her. Her job is to provide facilities for riders at her yard. She is paid for this & not to provide unsolicited, unwanted & unwarranted comment. What is she to you?....tell her to go forth & multiply!

I think T_Z has the sum of it - I particularly liked this bit...

A wonderfully elegant suggestion!!

So he's a young horse out hunting and she really expects him to come into his fences in a collected canter - you know its a load of bo**ocks and that you want him taking you to a fence.
When he goes back to school in the Spring you will expect to work on the quality of his approach & canter, you wouldn't wan't to be having to kick him in...
As we all know there are a million people out there who like to find problems with backs and who like to do far too much on teeth, ignore those comments.

What a stupid cow. I used to use your uncle to do our horses teeth until it proved too hard to get him to come all the way upto Bath. I had about 6 differnet people 'do' my Mare costing loads of money and your uncle was the only one to point out that she had a tooth missing on the bottom and the top one had grown down an extra 3 inches to fill the gap. Even I could see it when he showed me so how all the other muppets had totally missed it was beyond me. So for her comment about your uncles work alone I know she is a complete idiot who probably shouldn't be allowed near a livery yard

Actually she sounds a bit jealous. she is probably an unhappy snotty cow whos sh*t doesnt stink

Pretty much what I was going to say! There is definitely an element of resentment there. Ignore her, you obviously know what you are doing and it is important for young horses to learn at a slow pace. Hunting is great, he will learn loads from that and have fun at the same time.

Thanks again for everyones comments.. it's sounds so silly when i read it again on here, that it even upset me!
She is a silly cow,
She can also go forth and jump off a big cliff!
