Many of the older members on here will remember the great show jumpers from the past....Pat Smyth, David Broom, David Barker, Nelson Pessoa & Ted Edgar so take a look at this piece of film from 1963 & check out Ted Edgar! He's a regular at Midland Shows, watching the jumping, he has health issues but you younger members never be in any doubt he was a giant of the sport........as you will see in the video...... no one would do this now........ respect to Ted! ;)

Wow... Thanks for sharing, I love hickstead. And now I,ve remembered pat smythe. :)

Is it me or were the horses a lot more substantial back then.

now thats what you call riding!!! you don't see things like that anymore!! i think that eventing aswell is getting too heath and safety concious the fun element has gone. also the time in the cross country has gone from about an hour with stops (i think) to 11 minutes!! and the fences are have safety pins and things like that. i know it is safer for the horses but it's been happening for years. (i stand to be corrected)

"riding one handed with a broken arm" blimey! that puts me to shame, that. I sprained my wrist and did no more than pootle round the block while it was healing :D

lovely horses. To my amateur eye, they all look like they know their job better than some of the horses at this level today, and those riders are really in it to win it ;)

Is it just me or did it seem to be more about getting round quickly than it is today? They looked to be going a hell of a lot faster!! :D

You wouldn't catch me going near a jump with a broken arm, let alone the derby bank!!!

Absolutely brilliant, brought back wonderful memories...thanks for posting, back to a time when riders really rode their horses. Can you imagine any of them saying or posting ' I want to give my horse a calmer'?
