Had a chat on our yard today cause my mare never ever bucks but will do little bunny hop rears and my mates horse never rears but will do little bucks sometimes.

I said I prefer a rear because I lean forward and push her out of it, my mate prefers bucks as she is afraid they'll go up and over if rearing (which if they are massive I do appreciate they can).

So question is if your horse did one or the other (I realise its better that they do none of course) but which do you prefer it to be ????

Neither obviously.
But if my horse had to do one, it would be bucking.
Rearing scares me as, like your friend says they can go over backwards.

Can depend on the situation, but normally I prefer a buck! I hope it means they are enjoying themselves, as rears can be because they are not - hope you see what I mean!!
If they are big bucks or rears I think, although very nerve racking a rear is easier to stay on?? (I have fallen off many a buck, but touch wood never a rear -yet!)

Thats like asking would i prefer a bite or a kick mmm let me think ! would prefer a buck as i,ve survived a few of them never had a real proper rear so not sure i would react correctly, so thats my reasoning for choosing a buck.: )

Personally I wouldn't bother with either - there are enough horses out there that don't do either for me not to risk it. If I really had to choose, though, i'd rather deal with a bucker, assuming we're talking excited flybucks, not "get off my back" bucks.

buck.. anything that rears with me gets thumped really rather hard between the ears.

Having had a horse rear up and nearly go over on me, I would never have a rearer and wouldn't get on a known rearer again.
So it would be a bucker for me.

If they are quite unscary ones I don't really mind either but I don't think I'd cope with either that well if they were really bad! I'm more of a wimp than I used to be.

My old horse used to rear a lot (Morris), quite high as well, but he did it so much for so long and never went over that we just trusted him not to in the end. At the same time we had another horse (Paddy) who was a complete little sh*t, he did all kinds of naughty thing! He could really buck, it was quite funny but he had me off a couple of times.. so I think he was more scary than Morris.

Then I bought another horse after about a week he started rearing - he was really bad and seemed to totally loose the plot!! I took him to an event and he started napping and rearing XC, he wouldn't go in any direction he just kept rearing!! Then when tried to get him back on the wagon he went up and came down on my dads head!!!!

Luckily the lady we got him from took him back... He was very scary!!

My horse rears and bucks, she does both big style. I prefer bucks, as after having her rearers scare me, although can ride her through it. She was so dangerous at one point I wouldn't ride her for months.
So yes give me a buck any day.

Mine mare will rear in-hand if she's REALLY scared - i.e., try to clip her without sedation!

If she did either when ridden though, she'd be on the transfer list before her feet were back on the ground.

my boy used to buck when excited normally just before I let the reins drop slightly for a good canter/gallop...it was just a case of sitting to it...i knew when it was going to happen...although my sis in laws old loan horse reared...i did a jump class and were lined up to get rosette (4th) and he reared 3 times vertically at 16.3hh i stayed on as strangly i felt soo safe on him!!

Rearer, as long as they don't fall over.

I had ponies that reared back when I was fearless, so I just got used to it. Never had a bucker so if I got one now I'd probably bottle it after one or two falls and be too injured and scared to persevere and learn to sit to it.

Definitely bucking rather than rearing. Rearers never used to bother me, until i rode a habitual one in draw reins to break his habit... And now it's me that has a bad habit as i don't give with my hands anymore! It's a bit scary now, especially with that- i know what i should do, but it just doesn't happen any more :s

Bucks don't really bother me at all unless it's actual bronking, i've sat enough that they barely affect me anymore.

I mind rears less on something big and substantial than i do on a small wobbly thing, but i suppose that's normal ?

My horse bucks and my pony rears (tho the pony rears are so little they dont really count

) so neither bother me. If its a strange horse then I prefer bucking

Neither - a couple of years ago I would have said I would rather have a bucker than a rearer - but my current horse would have put bucking broncos the cowboys use to shame, and I wouldn't do either now

QR- Bucker... Dislike rearers, as the could go over backwards. That scares the living daylights out me
frown.gif
... Half the reason i don't ride my pony as much as i should

Don't think I'd mind as much if it was just 'baby' or small rears.

I would always prefer a rear............ only fallen off once with a rear and a buck and that was because it was in the same breath!!!
A rear to me is easier to get them moving afterwards but a buck they can do when going forwards...........
I have never ridden a compuslive rearer or bucker and I don't like either but if there was a choice of something to happen it would be a rear.........

Neither when I am on fortunately, but one of the palominos does both (signature) usually he goes up, all feet off the ground, and then he bucks.

I don't prefer either, although I can at least sit most rears, a buck with intent and I am a gonner!

I have recently had a horse that reared and span round and it scared the life out of me - he went pretty high and was pretty practised at it so the horse had to go back to its owner. I think the thing was that horse was doing it spitefully because it wasn't getting its own way. I came to the conclusion that there are plenty of other horses out there who were the same price who didn't rear so sent it back!!

Good on you Guilford!

Serious rearers and buckers are as bad as each other and I would have neither, however, horses that occasionally have a buck or a rear with no malace don't bother me at all.
