Candle has been well and truly burnt and both ends, which has left very little time to keep everyone updated on the antics of the grey boys and our new little arrival Jammie.

Billy

The eagle-eyed followers of my eventing pursuits might have noticed that I didn’t produce a report for Billy’s run around Rackham a couple of months ago. This was for no particular reason other than there wasn’t much to write home about… he did a beautiful test but the judge had obviously bypassed Specsavers as we got a very average score of 34. I was a little surprised as Billy is Mr Consistent, and is normally in the 20’s but the main thing was that he had been a very good boy so I shrugged it off and went down to the show jumping where he pinged round, just tapping 1 rail out where I reverted to old habits and hung on where Billy would have appreciated a long one. An easy clear XC round left us just outside of the placings, but my little Jelly Bean had been a superstar so I trucked home very content indeed  with 3 RFs to aim for later in the year.

I am perhaps over-cautious with my horses, and so the lack of rain has left us having a bit of a mid-season holiday which has done Billy the world of good. He knows his job so well that he doesn’t need to be flogged round the circuit every weekend, and I have found that saving him for the big ones is definitely the best way to run him. So after a quiet few weeks I decided I really ought to go and have a dressage tune-up so we went off to do Prelim where I decided to take a bit of a gamble and really ask for more from him in an attempt to find that elusive sparkle which will be critical at the RFs. He popped up to canter a couple of times in the trot work, but the test on the whole was really smart so I was chuffed to see that he had won easily with over 70% in very nice company.

The SJ demons needed facing sooner or later so we decided to go to a BS show (yes, really) where I popped Billy around the British Novice first. He was having an absolute whale of a time, and squeaking and plunging in the warm up, but he knuckled down beautifully in the ring and jumped a cracking little round. Unfotunately I managed to lose the final fence (which was on a related distance on a straight line from the fence I had just jumped. Yes, really) so ended up having to circle to find it which was incredible dumb of me, and denied poor Billy the chance to ping, squeal and buck his way around the jump off! The main thing was that he hadn’t breathed on a single pole which was a significant improvement. Next up was the 95cms Speed class. The competitive streak in me made me put my foot down a little, and it turned out that entering a speed class was the best thing I could have done as watching the video back the pace was spot on, but I felt like I was flying!! Not a bad round by my standards… what do you think?

So Billy is back to having a quiet time now before his first BE90 RF at West Wilts on the 14th Sept…. wish us luck!!

Murphy

The wheels had started falling off a little with Murphy, and with a bit of reflection I think I had been putting too much pressure on myself. Time is such a great healer, and our enforced break from eventing with the hard ground has been just what the doctor ordered. In a moment of madness I registered Murphy with BD and he also went along with Billy to the unaffiliated dressage competition for a tune up before our BD debut, where he won the Novice in great style (was very proud of my boys for both winning that day!). So our BD debut came at Crofton last Saturday, and I knew that he could produce some beautiful work providing I could engage pea-brains (that’s both of us, I went wrong in both tests at the unaff comp!). His first test was N23 and he was a very good boy, and did a nice safe test.

I was very pleased to see that he scored 68.14% which left us in 2nd place (Restricted and Overall) so we won £16 and bagged 5 points towards our winter regional qualification – not at all bad for a debut!! I had an awkward 30 mins between the 2 tests which was too long to keep working him, but not long enough to let him wind down… I went for the latter (lazy!) and struggled to motivate myself, let alone poor Murphy for the second test which was N37, and I felt that I rode a little “meh”. That feeling when you are merely a passenger and know that you can and should be doing something… anything… but I sat there like some spuds! The dear boy managed to score a respectable 65% all by himself for 3rd place, and I was really pleased to see that Valegro’s clone had only scored 70% when it looked every bit an 80% test so we weren’t too far behind perfection ;-) So another 3 points, and a good day out.

Murphy has also ventured out to do some BS! And blow me down, he only went and jumped a bloody clear round!! Admittedly it was only around a discovery, and we were certainly not showered with complements for our style but the main thing Is we were out there, doing it, and learning more about each other. I now ride him in a double and I can produce a much much better canter. However I haven’t quite got my eye in from that canter so it feels a little messy still but we will get there. And I am now very much of the attitude that it doesn’t matter how many poles fall, as long as we are both enjoying ourselves then that’s all that matters!

So next up is another BD show on Sunday at Sparsholt (not expecting much as there are Murphy-eating-banners around the arena!) then some more BS the following weekend before going to Goring for the ON (ground permitting). The aim is to do the CIC* at SOE, the IN at Pulborough, and then the CCI* or CIC* at Aldon to finish the season.

I am also very excited to be riding Murphy at Blenheim Horse Trials where we will be doing our very best guinea pig impressions during the Nick Gauntlett lecture demonstration on Thursday afternoon!! It is THE most amazing opportunity and I am so excited!! Please do come along and watch if you are planning on going – we will be doing all sorts of technical XC questions, and that is where darling Murphy really shines!

TBC for updates on Jammie :)

Jam

Last but not least, darling little Jammie!!

I have had her for 10 days now and I still can’t believe how lucky I am to have found her. She is not only incredibly classy with super paces, but she has the most beautiful temperament - She is desperate to please, kind, gentle and quiet so we have all completely fallen in love with little Jam Jar 

I had last week off work so the poor girly was thrown in at the deep end and my goodness can the girl swim!! I was a little doubtful that there was much of a jump in little Jam at first, as when I tried her she just clattered her way through lightweight plastic poles and had no idea how to organise her legs. I spent a bit of time loose schooling her over small jumping lanes with heavier wooden poles and the penny suddenly dropped and Jam displayed one heck of a pop! After a few sessions we decided it was time she went airborne with me in the saddle, so we hired a local SJ course to see what happened…WOW! She was breathtaking. She didn’t bat an eyelid at a single fence and we ended up jumping a full course of spooky fillers easily. Dear little JimJam was so desperate to please, and enjoying herself so much that it was all done with a little too much gusto ;-) So we ended up walking between the fences to introduce some decorum, and to help her organise her Bambi legs. I was grinning from ear to ear, my instructor was grinning from ear to ear, my Mum was grinning from ear to ear, astoundingly my Dad was grinning from ear to ear, and most importantly, little Jam was doing her very best Cheshire Cat impression! Happy happy happy!!

Jam was originally bought with the intention to keep as a project with a view to selling but I can’t see that happening somehow… there is something very special about this one and I feel like we have really bonded already. I feel totally safe and confident on her, we are a team already 

Her flatwork has come on in leaps and bounds too and she works in a very sweet little outline in the school. Her jumpies do tend to get her quite lit up though, and the trot becomes a little “sewing machine” like so there will be lots of work to do to keep her relaxed and forward. We are off to a local show on Saturday for her very first competitive outing where we will be taking part in the dizzy heights of a walk and trot test  I will make sure someone is armed with a video camera as I have a feeling it might make for some amusing viewing ;-) Our centre lines are pretty impressive for all the wrong reasons ;-)

I am very aware that it would be easy to take advantage of her bold and willing attitude and do too much too soon – she is only 4 afterall so we will have a nice quiet winter with a view to doing some BE80s next year. There is no rush, and she is far too nice to ruin  I feel so lucky to have her so I owe it to her to give her the very best home possible.

I will let you all know how we get on at the weekend, and in the meantime here are some piccies of the beautiful little girly.

Wow, it sounds as if all three are going really well! Lovely update. Perhaps see you at SoE... I am vaguely having CIC thoughts.... Maybe.

What a great update.

Sounds like you are properly refreshed from your short holiday and are ready to go again.

I particularly like the look of Jammie, what a star.

The boys are looking great, sounds like their little holiday has done them the world of good :)
Jammie is stunning, she sounds like a real star - so exciting!

Hope you can get pics/vids of your demo at Blenheim, sounds interesting!

Great report. Good to see the grey boys are behaving well too- obviously don't want to be outdone by the fantastic little miss Jam tart!

CAN'T WAIT to see her first dressage test!! So exciting for you to get her out and see what she makes of trotting in circles rather than galloping in straight lines! :)

Will watch the videos later as am at work, but just wanted to say that it sounds like the break has refreshed you all :) Well done on winning dressage on both boys! Quite an achievement!

I just love Jam, gorgeous!!! Makes me want another ex-racer. I had so much fun with my last one.

Ooooh please do... if your reports are anything to go by then I can imagine us having a hoot!! Perhaps I can assist in baby monitoring if you wouldn't mind riding Murphy in the SJ phase for me please ;) Keep me posted as would love to coordinate if you do go!

Thank you! We seem to be firing on all cylinders again so really looking forward to getting back out and about :) Dressage just doesn't quite do it for me ;)

Hahaha I wouldn't be surprised if the test involved more galloping in straight lines than trotting in circles ;) ;) She is a bit of a keen bean at the moment :)

She is just wonderful! I am so enjoying helping her fall in love with her new career... duck to water springs to mind!! :)

great report - glad they are doing well, they look lovely :biggrin3: - good luck at your next event! :)

Thank youuuuu!!!

Fab! Let's send Vito in on his own to do the SJ for both of us, whilst we play with the baby. At the moment, I am thinking more CIC than not CIC, going to chat with my trainer about it next week.

I like this idea a lot. I will polish up my Nursery Rhymes and bring some bleach for Vito :D

Glad to hear the grey boys are doing so well! Sounds like the break has done you all good.

And you already know I love little Jam! If you need a videographer/personal photographer on Saturday I'm more than willing, really interested to see the atmosphere at SDBH show (and meet Jam!).

Larry obviously heard he's got competition for being the best ex racer in these parts as he's stepped it up the last couple of days!

She's such a gorgeous mare! Good luck with her and your next events! x

:) Thank you!!

Lovely report :)
Jammie is lovely!

Thanks :) I still can't believe how lucky I was to find my little bargain basement pocket rocket :D

Super report! Loving Jam - she looks amazing :)

Thank you - she is such a good advert for ex-racers, they are SO underrated!

Wow! What a lovely update to read :) I love Jam, she looks lovely in all of the pictures and looks far more grown-up that a four year old :D

:) Thank you! I keep having to remind myself that she is only 4 as she is so sensible and bold! Would be so easy to get carried away with her so I need to make sure I dont rush her :)
