I was chatting to someone that works in a saddlery about a 'certain' hat yesterday. This particular hat is vented and costs around the £260 mark

She was telling me that she had dropped one on the floor accidently and it had shattered into lots of pieces

It amazed me how something like that could be considered safe, I certainly wouldn't want to rely on one to keep my head protected!

But is the shattering part of the protection process - it means that the shock is not absorbed but dissapated?? Resulting in less jarring of the head and brain.

A thought....

I have to say I did consider that line of thought. However I do think that whilst horse riding, whether it be hacking, jumping or schooling there are huge possibilities of your head getting 'banged' more than once on the way down.
If the hat has shattered so to lessen the impact on the brain there isn't going to be much left to protect you from the second or third knocks.

I'm not sure I've ever banged my head more than once (if I havem it could explain a lot...), but I can see how if a leg is caught in the stirrup, the head could be bounced along the ground. WOrrying!

Irrelevant to me, though, since I would never spend £260 on something that does the same job as a £60 hat! They all look sh*tty after 6 months on a yard, lol!

I agree, the fact that the hat 'shattered' is incredibly worrying

My hat has been on the go for about 8 years now, and had a fair few whacks and bumps in its time - if I had had one of these £260 hats, I dread to think how many I would have got through by now!

There aren't many hats on the market for that kind of price... it's not hard to work it out!! I obviously didn't post the name as that would be seen as defamatory, I think.

Not only that but if my head did take a knock in a fall I'd be far more likely just to go out and replace a £60 hat than a £260 one!!

It is worrying, and there are plenty of materials available that will absorb and dissipate shock, repeatedly, without undergoing much deformation themselves.

And there are a fair few hats around in that price range (and higher !) these days...
