there is a horse for sale at my yard who I absolutely LOVE. Just wondered what you would pay for him (I have no idea what boss is asking...).

He is 4 yrs old, dutch import with full KWPN papers, 16.1 (at least!) bay gelding.

He was very green when he arrived but is now going forward in something approaching an outline, will W/T/C on both reins and starting basic lateral work. He is rather inclined to drop behind the leg but is straight forward and keen to please. He's jumped about 6 fences in his whole life but did all of these with enthusiasm off a forward stride. Quiet and sensible - I would say on the lazy side rather than the sharp side tho

He is friendly and easy to handle in all ways. Dunno if he loads but would assume so juding by his overall attitude.

On the negative side, he windsucks *a lot*.

What would other people offer for a horse like this? I'm half thinking of making an offer for him as I really really like him but would like to go in with something 'sensible'.

around £1k

whats his breeding tho? could make all the difference between £1k and £4k to someone.

Id never in a million years buy a windsucker.

I had a mare that wind sucked and she was wicked little horse

Hard to say without seeing the horse
but prob no more than £2.5k and for that he would have to be special

I would say £1500 - £2000 for a severe windsucker. Reason being that long term preventative stuff is going to cost money especially if he goes on to develop ulcers or stomach problems such as colic which a fair few do. Then there is the problem of selling on and some livery yards absolutely hating them if you had to move yards.

thanks all, I was thinking in the £1000 - £1500 mark, interesting that some would pay more tho - I suspect my boss will want more for him.

I don't know much about windsucking other than that I've heard that it is sometimes linked to dietry deficiencies? but then becomes a habit. It doesn't overly bother me TBH but that could be due to my ignorance.

I'm still mulling it over, this is really helpful tho, thanks

As windsucking is classed as a declarable vice - I would put him at £1000. It can be helped by adding an ant-acid to the feed (something like Feedmark's Settelex), as studies have shown that in some cases horses do it to relieve stomach pain caused by too much stomach acid. Feeding a forage based diet can also help enormously - i.e. no cereals in the feed whatsoever. Windsucking can cause loss of weight and recurrent bouts of colic. Some livery yards still think that this is copied behaviour and will not have a windsucker on the yard. Taking all this into account, I had a confirmed windsucker years ago - he was the best hunter going and took me, a fairly nervous rider, over some serious stonewalls in the High Peak Country. If you can get him cheaply enough - I would go for him! I don't think your boss will be able to ask much for him and he must declare the windsucking.

tbh with horse prices atm you would be looking to pay at least 3-4k just because its warmblood!! BUT if its on your yard offer them a cheeky offer,, id say about £2500 (start low as you can always come up!) then go to £3000 if need be
