My old boy had pooed in his corner manger this morning luckily his breakfast is served in a rubber bucket. He’s also pooed in his automatic waterer on numerous occasions. It’s lovely scooping out the floating nuggets and then draining out the remaining poo gravy ?

This is why I hate buckets without an escape ladder (stick of some sort) in the feed room or a cover over the top. Obviously you can't cover your water bucket in your stable but I always think water buckets containing sugar beet or carrots should be covered up. I hate the thought of anything drowning, even if they are rodents.

A piece of baler twine tied to the handle and draped into the water has undoubtedly saved many rodents from drowning. I've not had a fatality in 5 years whereas it was at least once a month beforehand.

good idea.

I drowned a translucent swallow once that had fallen from its nest in the rafters of the barn. It must have been only hours old. We had loads of cats around and I didn't want it to be teased mercilessly by a cat. There was no way it would have been taken care of by its parents, it would have died of cold being outside the nest and the nest was about 40 foot up. I held it in my hand and drowned it in a bucket of water. I've never forgotten how much it struggled for it's life given its tiny size.

I assumed I was being merciful. It's not something I would repeat and I would never want anything to drown again.
