Just a couple of questions, first of all does anyone know who the photographer was at Gatcombe Horse Trials (2)?

And where would be the best place to advertise two intermediate/2* event horses? I know the market probably isn't great at the mo but they are v nice horses and can't decide where would be best to advertise? Seeing as i'm a little injured at the moment I am having to sell them sooner rather than later or they won't get ridden!

Thank you if you can help!

I would say H&H would probably be the best place to try now quickly before xmas.

Bet you are feeling very stiff, are you having lots of hot baths and arnica!? And being waited on hand and foot

Hope they get sold and you feel better soon x

Either H&H or Horsequest seem good places to start.

Rachel Wakefield has a good site to sell horses also, but I guess they would take more commission than the cost of H&H advert.

Good luck, hope the vanilla vodka helped you sleep

I think the photographer was Fiona Scott Maxwell?? Apparently they automatically send the photo's out to you (old school style!) and if you don't want them you send them back - wish I had known that on the day as I spent ages hunting for the photographers tent!

Re; advertising, as everyone has said H&H is prob the best place - the other site is Horse Select as it is dedicated to competition horses and split into specific categories so could be worth a try.

Hope your aches & pains ease up soon

I'll try internet first I think and see what happens, then H&H if no interest maybe.

[/ QUOTE ]

word of mouth could be worth a go to, telling a few people who are out eventing. Word will soon be spread

You should have spread the word at Burghley!

If its the internet then i'd say horsequest has a lot better quality than the other sites although horseselect often has some decent ones on tehre too.

Then H&H at a later date

We nearly sold one via word of mouth but they messed us about so so much.... Don't really want to sell them so hoping the pressure of an ad will make me do it!

Just to add that Tina Myles had a wanted ad for two star horses on horsequest recently.

[/ QUOTE ]
There are a couple of 'event horses' wanted ads in the back of last weeks H&H. (Andrea Verdina was one I remember but not sure what he was looking for- just recall seeing a wanted ad from him)

If you really want to sell and they are smart horses I would def give Rachel Wakefield a ring - although you pay commission, they have big money clients who pay top dollar so I'm not sure you lose out. Also they do a lot of leg-work for you. Uptown eventing - but you probably know that

Paddy Muir's site (Horseselect.com) is quite eventer specific and although a lot of horses are based in the north they seem to have plenty down south. Got a lot of interest very quickly when I had a PN horse on her site. Also as there aren't as many horses on it they don't disappear down to page 13 two days after you have put the ad on. If she knows someone who might be interested she often doesn a bit of match-making too.

Have you thought about the North American market? I know the US isn't the healthiest economically right now but people with lots of money aren't likely to run out all of a sudden and there always seems to be a market for horses that will do that sort of level, especially if they could do Young Riders or Amateur stuff.

It might be worth getting hold of someone like Leslie Law or blackeventer's son, (sorry don't know his name) on the West Coast, or even someone like Jimmy Wofford or the O'Conners, who have a fair number of clients, and at least let them know you have the horses for sale. Perhaps not the best time of year, with the season winding down there, but soon everyone will be heading for Florida, which tends to be when people want new horses. It's quite a bit more difficult to make up horses there, with travel distances, lack of events and costs, so solid horses with CCI experience are not as easy to come by.

Another option would be to advertise somewhere like Chronicle Of The Horse but that's really only worth it if you're willing to do quite a big ad and that's only worth it depending on the sort of prices you want.

Just a thought . . .

I would agree on the Rachel Wakefield thing.. and there's obviously others that seem to have alot of horses pass through their hands.. ie Robin Dumas. I'm sure Gill Watson would also be a usefull person to tell, as she's bound to know of YRs wanting 2* horses..
Also, give Sorrel Warrick (sp?) a ring, as she rang us the other day looking for a 2* horse..

Re US market: there is a Suzy Something - can't remember her bl*sted surname! - who is agent for loads of American transactions. She brought some Yanks to see a horse of mine this time last year - she's from Berkshire and really nice - someone on here will know her name
blush.gif
Only thing is, she was saying American market for European horses was very bad because the weak dollar made them seem very expensive in US$. Don't know how currencies have moved since then? What about Bridget Parker as well? She has lots of American contacts

Yes, I know the lady Susan - can't remember her surname but will ask as a friend just bought a horse from her. One thing to bear in mind though if you're selling to the States, they like a very very thorough vetting, xrays, scans, the works and are not shy about legal action if the horse turns unsound...

I would agree about North Americans wanting very thorough vetting - I was a bit horrified when I realised how generally less obsessive vetting is here. Xrays, for instance, are absolutely standard practice! That said, if you get someone with a good coach (which anyone looking for a YR type horse will have) he/she will have educated the client in what to expect in a horse with some miles on it.

As to the legal side, there's no reason to be alarmist.;) One assumes you are representing your horses fairly. Also, if the transaction is done here then UK laws apply.

Agreed to that the exchange in not in your favour but again, people who can do things like buy a 2* horse for their kid are not likely to be the hardest hit. Worth a shot.

Obviously an agent is a good idea but I also think it's worth some direct connection - why pay more commission than you need to? Eventing is an international community and in this market it only makes sense to actively pursue all your options.
