Just thought I'd finally provide a diagnosis as to what was causing my poor boy's lameness..........we have a fractured pedal bone!

Trotted up lame still on hard surface but was sound as a pound on soft service in the school, nerve booked the suspected area, trotted up much sounder, so xrays of both front feet to establish the cause.

Vet's suggestion of another 6 weeks box rest, he's already had 4, some corrective padded shoeing to aid healing and help the growth of his typically flat TB feet which my farrier is fitting today, and another xray in 6 weeks time to ensure its healed, vet is confident of a full recovery!

Healing vibes for a speedy get well! :) if anyone can share any experiences they may have had with this injury, i'd be grateful to hear of them!

We have just received the same news today...starting 4mths solid boxrest..not allowed out stable at all..and wearing a cast...he is only 6yrs :(

No experiences myself but with two broken horses I can relate!

Speedy get-well vibes coming your way!

Thanks Fleabite :)

Sorry to hear your news baily :( do you know what kind of fracture your boy received and what exactly he's done?

My one is fortunately a small fracture which hasnt reached the joint nor is it infected and vet is fairly confident some remedial shoeing and 2-3 months box rest should do the trick. I was to be honest fairly pleased with this diagnosis as original suspected diagnosis was tendons which I really didnt want.

How comes a cast is required for your boy baily, have vet's given any indication of recovery etc? Healing vibes to your boy too.

He has a full fracture to the pedal wing going up into the joint..cast is to hold the bones back together and stabilise the foot. The foot is also very full of fluid. He is facing 3/4 months full box rest. Not allowed out of stable. Then a further 6mths boxrest with limited small paddock turnout time daily. So depending how it goes its a full 9-12 mths off. Then if sound start building up work. It maybe a bit shorter. Just depends how this first bout of boxrest goes if we can keep him chilled out. The last few weeks have been a nightmare. No sign of him getting used to it. Sadly he is having to spend a lot of the time doped up.

Oh baily, how awful :( I'm very sorry to hear, seems your poor boy has taken a harder brunt to this injury then mine. Fortunately my boy has been "fairly" accepting of box rest although it's taken 4 weeks to get him to a point where he's not not as fussed when he's left on his own now and will wander back to his haynet instead of box walking. Your boy may come round to it if you can keep his mind occupied, some it just takes a little longer :(

Has he got company at all to help keep his mind reassured while on boxrest? I've come across various box rest ideas and suggestions which have worked fairly well if you wanted me to share with you.
