To cut a long story extremely short......I ride out with a very dear friend who has an Arab gelding that I feel is totally spoilt. He bolts forward without warning past me and Fly (and anyone else who is with us) and it really pi**es me off. My friend (who is lovely) won't accept that he is rude and says he is scared and stops after 10 - 15 yards. My argument is that in that space all sorts can happen and in fact have done in the past. For those who remember, my grey, Blue, kicked and broke the leg of another horse after her arab bolted past us and instigated a "rush" past. I don't want to fall out but feel that unless she gets her horse under control I cannot ride with her. It's so difficult but this happens at least 2 or 3 times every ride. She is into Pirelli and if that is what its all about quite frankly I don't want to know. Am I over reacting?

I don't think you are over-reacting at all. Being able to keep your horse from barging past others is a basic element of hacking 'manners' in my book!
Whether or not he is scared, she should be able to prevent him doing it, especially if it happens 2 or 3 times a ride. If I were her I wouldn't ride out in company until it was sorted.

ot over reacting at all. If anyone does that to pickle he goes mad. I try to keep out of harms way and keep him at the back so horses cant go past him. It really bugs me though when people either loose control or just fancy having "a bit of fun" I would stop riding with her if I were you for the good of you and your horse

Not over reacting at all, it's dangerous and she is putting you at risk, I would stop hacking with her and tell her firmly that you find her horse's behaviour unacceptable. If you are good friends she should be able to accept this.

Its sometimes hard to approach friends with problems like this, my friend has done me a huge favour and ridden my old lad out as a lead for my youngster for a month or so now and I had issues with her letting him do things I wouldnt. After about 5 times of slopily letting him plod up the roads at buckle ends he started to spook at grids and walk so slow it was rediculous, I mentioned it a few times and like you made excuses, he's scared or he's tired etc!! I tried so hard to explain in a nice way that it had taken me ages to make him round and forward going when he's being ridden but it didnt work! Last weekend we went out and he was even worse, I asked her if she could do me a favour and when she said what I said 'ride the bloody thing properly before i kick him up the ass for you!!'. It did the trick luckily and she admitted after the ride that it was much nicer when he was behaving then I had a massive apology to her, I can be a bit sharp with people and genuinely dont mean it just not got a good temper with people!! ;-/
Anyway, after the long story!! You're better off saying something to her and making her realise it will be much better for you both if she respects you and your horse, if she doesnt take too kindly to it at lesat you know where you stand!! ;-)

How can you blame Parelli for your friend being inconsiderate and unsafe? There are loads of unsafe riders who are trained by BHS instructors you know.
Just sit her down and have a chat with her, explain why you feel this is dangerous, what the consequences could be and that you don't feel able to ride out with her if she continues to allow it to happen.
Whatever trainer she uses, suggest she gets some help to sort it out.

i cant stand people that are ''wishy washy'' with their horses!!! im far from hard with my 2 but i refuse to let them be rude and bolt or gallop past others as its happened to me and it frightened the [****] out of bear who is only a baby, and its not nice. my friends 11 yr old daughter can be rude like that and sometimes i cant help but scream at her as she's old enough to know the difference between whats right and whats wrong. sorry for ranting but thats my pet hate whilst riding!!!

Have to say that most of the parelli devotees I have met have been very wishy washy with their horses and being wishy washy is what causes incidents like this.

i agree, i went to watch a ''Natural Horsemanship'' demonstration on saturday, i work with pressure halters and like to work with the ropes etc...
but anyway when i saw this local woman making a complete and utter fool of herself it was sooooo painful to watch, we could of watched a carcrash and it would have been less traumatising!!!
she broght a shetland in to the arena, thats had a bad start in life blaa blaa blaa,
put it this way it went home more confused and traumatised than when it started!!!!
the "lady'' was bloody petrified of all 3 horses she demonstrated on!!!
the last horse was one of her clients horses. they brought it in to arena the "lady" told her to ask her to go back and this mare looked so confused!!!! so "lady" started waving rope at it and wouldn't dare get too close!!!! she was a real WISHY WASHY PERSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was this lady claiming to be giving a Parelli demo or was she just another crap horseperson? (Like all the crap horsepeople I keep seeing when I'm out and about, at the local big livery yard, at Felbridge showground, hacking out on the lanes near me... etc etc...).
She sounds very familiar to me, you mentioning the shetland rings a bell...
Many of the Parelli people I've met have been the exact opposite of what you say. Far from being wishy washy they have been rather hard and unforgiving of their horses. That is why, although I started off studying NH through Parelli, I moved away.
I know it's pointless saying this, but there are crap horsepeople all over the place. Unfortunately the Parelli ones happen to have attached a convenient label to themselves and wear their orange sticks like badges. How many times do we read rants on here and other forums about inconsiderate and dangerous riders? Do we bang on about who they claim to have been taught by and blame that person for their idiocy? Nope.
I don't think Parelli is brilliant, and I do think there are a lot of daft people around horses who have decided that Parelli is their personal flavour of the month. But then, there are a lot of daft horse people around full stop.

she doesn't ''work'' like parelli, but i think that she thinks she does!!! she passed a few exams over the last few months and now she thinks she can work miracles!!!!
a god friend of mine had to sort her horse out a couple of years ago as the horse didnt leave the yard for 2 YEARS!!! as she was scared of it!!

so what does that tell you!!!!

For that very reason I'd never ride out with the woman again! And say so... you don't want some compo crazy person suing you for wreaking their horse!

Sophie, what it tells me is that this "Parell" person giving demos is a complete fraud. Nobody passes Parelli "exams" in a few months. They generally take their level 1 assessment in say 4 - 12 weeks (but some take ages over it!!). The Level 2 is a lot more work, and she's be quite extraodinary to get that in less than a year. Most take much longer. So, what you say, assuming that's what you've been told, doesn't make sense.
Then, if she is doing Parelli demos - nobody is considered competent to do demos until they have passed Level 3, and normally then only if they have done the additional study involved to become endorsed as an instructor.
So - the person you are talking about who did the demo is yet another incompetent idiot claiming to be something they are not eh? There's a lot of them about - not just "Parelli" wannabees.

no sorry she didnt do parreli exams it was with 'Vaneesa Bee' (not sure how to spell her name!!!) but vanessa works with horses really well, this Demo lady thinks she's like parelli, if thats makes sense? xxx
