We don't often stay away at shows but decided last week that as there was a Newcomers 2nd round and HOYS Amateur qualifier we would take Saffy and the super new boy we have in on competition sales livery to save them undue amounts of travelling between home and Rowallan.
Mick, a 17hh 9yo irish boy arrived the weekend before last and was thrown somewhat in at the deep end by staying away so soon but he coped brilliantly and showed what a lovely person he is. On Thursday A and Mick jumped their first class, the Discovery, and I was "yay" when they went and won it! Lots of pats and polos for him being so straight and uncomplicated.
On Saturday he jumped DC in the British Novice and also DC (and 2nd of 13 DC's) in the Discovery, qualifying him for the Novice Champ at SHOYS. Someone is going to have lots and lots of fun with him - A certainly is in the meantime
We also took Saffy (or mad mare as she is fondly known
) and we'd planned to jump the Fox on Thursday but switched to the Grade C qualifier on Friday as Mark McGowan had the water jump in as an option and we wanted the practice before the Newcomers 2nd round. For a horse we thought when we got her a year ago was a 1.05 track girl she jumped her socks off having had the first part of the treble uphill as A says he pushed and should have held stride.
On Sat in the Newcomers 2nd round she just breathed on the back bar of an oxer coming out of a double but again jumped out of her skin. The following pics are a sequence of her jumping the water jump for the first time - queue eeks when I watched it back! A's face....
And quite what that foreleg was up to initially....!
Yesterday she jumped the HOYS Amateur qualifier and went clear in the first round, along with 22 others. The first horse in - who won - jumped an amazing round at top speed and having beaten that horse against the clock a few weeks back A knew he had to fly. Saffy was perhaps a bit tired by then or maybe the speed was just too much, but she had the first two down and then jumped round the rest well. We were delighted with her anyway - for a 15.2hh (or 15.3hh as I tell her to make her feel better
) - who is not long out of Newcomers she was fantastic.
We're off to RHS next weekend and the track there won't look quite so huge after this one!
