Millie is going to her first show on Monday. She will mainly be jumping (please see post in PG to see her jumping

) and will also do some gymkhana. We have now decided to take her in to the Best Turned out as well to give her an introduction to the Show ring.

So a few questions

For best turned out is it best/essential to plait?

Does it matter that she is a welshie?

Does her mane look awful un-plaited (it has never been pulled

)?

And How many plaits do you think she would need? Is there a correct amount or is it down to the individual?

MM don't get plaited, and they don't tend to be in best turned out, (that's left for the plaited show ponies) unless it is hacking turnout (ie non-plaited).

Could I plait her and turn her into a show pony wannabe?

I forgot to say it is only a small local show.

I quite often do best turned out with one of my ponies, he's a haflinger/welsh b/c mix. I always show him unplaited, and I don't think I have ever not been placed. As long as your pony is very well groomed then go for it.

The small 'local' shows i've been to still end up with the 'professionals'. We have plaited our NFx for the pony club pony class. It all depends on the show judge!
If I were you, I'd plait her, as long as you don't end up with golf balls. And as long as you have a good day out, it wont matter where you come. And if the judge said you shouldnt have entered, then youll know for next time!

Theres no reason why a native can't go in a turnout class... I have a friend who has a fell and this is all she does with her, she gets placed every time out!

I always did my wleshies with one un balled plait just after the forlock, then rest of mane neat and clean and free flowing. I would clean her till she sparkles and with that face you can't loose.

Is her mane smart/tidy enough to be free flowing? It's never been pulled but it isn't very thick anyway. It has however been...ehem...Cut

recently so I am a bit paranoid about it!

As you're not showing her in an M & M class I'd personally pull and plait the mane, trim her legs clean and show her as a show pony. Oh, and a chin trim may be required given the time of year, lol!

Section B Welshes and partbreds are usually plaited.

What does the schedule say? Some smaller shows will say that plaiting not required.

For turnout classes plait on the nearside, stitching is correct with no thread showing. Number of plaits is an uneven number down the neck and with the forelock an even number. She has a lovely neat mane but I guess it will be quite thick so it would be better to do more plaits than less.
You will also need to plait her tail. Pulling tails takes several weeks if you do the job properly so not an option.

Trim legs/heels to remove feather. Wash till she sparkles.

She's a lovely pony - have a fun day.

Tnavas has pretty much covered it!

I think plaiting would be a good idea as she doesn't have a MASSIVE neck, so plaiting will show it off better.......

Trim legs to be neat, plait tail, make your white bits SUPER WHITE! and the rest of her just sparkling clean! (although she doesn't look like a "dirty" pony anyway! lucky you!)

Also, hoof oil, as she has pale hooves clear hoof oil or vaseline makes them look nicer too!

It doesnt matter a bit she is a welshie! It is one of those shows thats rather judge preference orientated, but if she is beautifully presented you have just as much of a chance of placing as everyone else! maybe better if you do a better job than them

Just have to say that she is a cutie, and I am rather fond of her colour!!

Thanks! I think I probably will plait as her jockey wants her to look really smart. She hopefully will look sparkling on the day. The only problem is she will be doing two jumping classes before best turned out (weird schedule!) so we will have to have a quick tidy up of jockey and pony before she goes in to it. I can't wait!!
