Hi Folks. I would appeciate some advice please. I have finally arranged to go hunting for the first time ever in a couple of weeks time - it will be during the week at a quiet local meet so hopefully not too many people about to see me make a fool of myself! I've followed on foot for a couple of seasons and finally feel in a position to give it a go though will chicken out of the jumps (unless tiny) for now..
I usually hack Chum in snaffle. He is normally quite laid back but gets a bit strong when cantering in company though nothing too much. I was thinking of adding a flash for extra control. Would you add more? Also, I was thinking I might need a little more to hold on to - would you say neck strap or balance strap? I've got some sticky bums too..
Last question (for now), can you recommend smart, warm gloves with lots of grip?
Thanks in advance for any advice for a first-timer.

How exciting. Personally I wouldn't change anthing bit wise, but would be inclined to have a running martingale - if not already. If you find your horse very strong, you can reconsider for next time.

Gloves - well woof do a very good waterproof and warm pair.

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.

I agree wouldn't change the bit but maybe a flash. Would always hunt with a breastpalte, gives you something to hang on to as well as extra protection!

As for gloves i use shires leather ones, there really good and don't slip when it rains!

Also if it's your horses first time you might want to put a green ribbon in his tail! Just to keep others away!

Happy hunting!

Thank you for your replies :)
I will keep the bit the same and just add the flash. My YO suggested a breastplate too so have added to the shopping list - any particular make or are they all about the same? I will see if local tack shops have suggested gloves - I've only got little hands so need to try on first.
I will put the green ribbon in too - I've got no idea if he hunted with previous owners though I'm sure they will guess it's my first time!
Thank you - I'm nervous and excited already and it's two weeks away!

I wear woof wear event type gloves, they're pretty good. I don't like leather cos have never worked out how to clean them!!
I hate running martinglaes for hunting - only cos tried one with my youngster and ended up with no steering. Deffo breastplate, and if you want to use a running attachement make sure its nice and loose!

Enjoy!!
