i have had tango on 1 mg of prascend for 6 weeks now, (vets coming monday to do more bloods).. he has started drinking and weeing more again, does this mean the dose isnt right?, i have just started giving him brewers yeast, and want a suger free low starch feed to mix it with, what do you all suggest? at mo i have him on happy hoof and a bit of speedibeet, i want to take him off both as they have mollasses in.. he is very itchy, barefoot trimmer said its probably sugar intolerance?. whats healthy hoofs like? says low sugar and starch...

I was recommended Allen and Page Fast Fibre for a cushings pony, it is very low in sugar and starch so is suitable for laminitics also.
Are you soaking his hay to reduce sugars in it.
If he has started drinking more again it is likely that he may need a higher dose to stabilise again, ask your vet when he comes out.
My pony has been on prascend for just over a year, he started on 1 then had 2 for a while but has now dropped down to 1/2 a day and is doing well.

thanks for your reply..
he dont go much on fast fibre...
i soak haylage for 7-8 hours a day.. hes out all day and in at night...
i want to give him a compleat feed so i dont need to worry about vits and mins..hes very slightly over his ideal weight, 12.3hh and 330kg...

Interesting that yours doesnt like FF, mine wont eat it either, but it is supposed to be the best thing for them, I gave up and he gets things he shouldnt but at 32 I would rather he ate his feed, I feed him Safe and Sound because he will eat that.

There was a thread in NL about Pink Powder the other day and it seemed that brewers yeast or yea sac is better, cheaper and not full of unwanted sweepings. I use brewers yeast now and it seems to work well.

I don't believe soaking haylage achieves anything, as the sugars present are no longer water soluble, like they are in hay.

If he doesn't like FF - then perhaps a hay or straw based chaff with no molasses and a mineral supplement (that contains magnesium, copper and zinc).

sorry i am rubbish with hay and haylage. i cant get hay.. we are supplyed organic haylage home grown,
so do i not need to soak it? i dont want him getting fat.. its got a lot of rye grass in it..
could the itching be due to the sugars like in the grass or feeds?...
i have tried hoof kind and dengie malasess free he didnt like them.. what about the healthy hoofs?

My 12"1 is 210kg.... :o

It is much much cheaper to feed a mix and a balancer. Something like speedibeet or fast fibre with nat slimline, formula for feet or equine answers 365 or global herbs globalvite (no calories in it)

However if not, then it will be hard to find a feed like that. I would guess at allaen and page probably being the most likely to do a feed of that sort - but healthy hooves, happy hoof etc all contain molasses, and quite a hefty bit of it if you are feeding at recommended feeding levels!

I only say because I was pondering the differences in sugars of hay v haylage myself the other day and lo and behold, the Rockley fairy heard my thoughts

Regarding feed - the only important thing will be the supplements and the medication, so the base will just be something to mix it into.
It cannot be anything mollassed and I prefer to stay away from alfalfa if possible
That leaves you with things like Fast Fibre, unmollassed beet, hay chaff or oat straw chaff (Pure feeds do one).

I have a bag of hay chaff that we order from a feed merchant. They WILL order it in if you ask for it. It serves my Tank well who isn't keen on bucket feeds - hell it's just chopped hay - what's not to like;)

To tempt fussy feeders you can use cheap tricks like fenugreek seeds, turmeric (good for joints) and herbs (mint, dandelion, nettle etc).

One of my theories on itching is that it's secondary to liver and/or digestive issues (when mites or skin conditions have been ruled out). My old boy became itchy a few years ago - when his age started catching up with him. He gets notably worse on spring grass...hmmm!

With this in mind you could consider a course of Global Herb's Restore as a detox and then follow up with herbs long term (detoxing plus milk thistle).

Regarding mineral supplement, I am a fan of Pro Hoof as it contains more balance of minerals for your money.
