I recently bought a bag of grass nuts from my local merchants and they were unbranded but had a picture of a cow, horse and sheep on the front. When I opened them they were quite big nuts, probably half the size of my little finger, and took ages to soak through. I ended up not using them as I was a bit concerned about them - no idea why really I guess grass is grass!

Although I've never used them the only grass nuts I've seen before were Simple Systems and they were much smaller and more like pellets.

Do you think the unbranded ones would have been safe to feed to horses if they were also suitable for other livestock? They are the only ones my merchant supplies.

I use the ones you describe all the time mixed with Alfa A and soaked. The horses love them when we haven't got much grass. There is not much food value in them which is good if you have fatties. It's more about the taste I think for them.

Thanks DaffyAppy, having just looked up the delivery charge for Simple Systems they are out of the equation now anyway!

I thought they might help maintain weight over winter when mixed with their usual feed but I guess they won't if there's not much nutritional value in them.

I disagree. There is a lot of nutritional value in it. It is just grass after all and grass is what gets weight on horses in the good months so is a great feed for winter use. I use it to keep weight on my oldies in the winter.
