I was hesitant to post this in case it looked like shameless self promotion but I would be v interested in your feedback... I'm so depressed by the sliding standards of horse and pony welfare amongst kids, and I wondered if anyone else had experienced it? Has the Pony Club gone out of fashion?? :(

Thoughts?

well, my yoof of today helped me poo-pick,buy knocking over the barrow and sending the contents rolling down hill. Then he galloped away tail held high. But, being a yearling we'll forgive him.

kids are different today, the majority that i have encountered seem (certainly at teenager stage) believe the world owes them a living and if you are over 25 well you are WELL OLD MAN!

On the flipside there are still SOME well mannered and considerate young people about and I think a lot depends on the parenting and the relationships between the child and the parents.

But im sure that when i was a teenager i was a spotty yob who thought i knew everything - perhaps its just a cycle. who knows?

I agree with the sentiment, though when I have observed this sort of behaviour at shows it is across the whole spectrum of ages! From the oh so terrible 'yoof' up to those who should know better!!

There is a lot of ttruth in this blog. My daughter (winner of PC camp best girl trophy for two consecutive years) were commenting on the same thing only a fortnight ago. At our local RC show we noted several incidences of bad horsemanship, bad turnout and downright ruded and ignorant behaviour -m most notable the not thanking the judge and ring stewards.

Sadly it seems that some memebers of society believe they can win everything have no responsibility or respect for themselves or their pets/horses possesion. These people then have children with similar values.

However there are still many decent people around. Lets all make sure that we ensure our own standards and those of our children remain high.

hmm... dont tar all with the same brush!! I know a lot of middle aged people who do the most sillyest of things with their horses simply because thats what theyve always done... and wouldnt possibly take any advice off a young person.. because what would they know?

Youth is Wasted on the Young and Always has Been

I Fully apreachiate not ALL YOOFS are in this Catergory

A survey recently produced stated that a current 16 year old is about as mature as a 13 year old in the 1970`s, I think a lot of this down to the risk averse society not allowing children to develop and gain life - work experience in their early teens any longer, and they spend so much time shut up alone in their bedrooms with all the trappings of today electronic age.

The Hairy Old Cob Theory it all started to go wrong with society when East Enders (DEAD ENDERS) came onto the Television and it has got worse year on year also this Country has been allowed to become a Dustbin for All and Sundry all bleating the Human Rights act, and we are reaping what we have sown from lefti liberal policies and LACK OF DISCIPLINE, in the Schools or in the Home which has led to this FERAL BEASTIAL GENERATION who have little or no work Ethic in General spawned from previous generations who have never worked or will work, and this pathetic Celebrity Culture so many now support like that STUPID Sally Bercow (The Cow part is apt) apearing in big brother.

Better yet, let's head back a few more decades.

Better drowned than duffers. If not duffers, won't drown.

If I ever have kids (shudders), I'm living by that rule...

haha, this seems to be causing controversy!! I completely agree that lack of horse sense is not limited to the youth (the girl who threw a strop at the show was at least my age), but I think the problems begin in childhood, when kids aren't taught to respect their ponies, and treat them like machines instead. I'm a wishy washy liberal, but even I have to agree that a lot of problems seem to have been caused or at least exacerbated by diminishing discipline in schools, and I think this has infiltrated organisations like the Pony Club. I'm only 24, but I remember there being serious repercussions if you were suspected of neglecting your pony's welfare at camp or at rallies. Doing PC tests were also invaluable ways of making kids learn horse care - the idea of failing a test was so abhorrent to me that I studied very hard indeed.

Do I have the solution? No. I only wish I did :(

I can see where your coming from, there are lots of children with horses now that years ago wouldn't be able to afford them! horses and ponies can be picked up for nothing and without trailers and wagons (which do cost a lot more than nothing!) cannot get to such pc rallies etc! which does leave a lot of ponies in very unknowledgable homes. Uneducated people aren't as bad as damn right ignorant people!

disclaimer - this is not always the case! just one instance!

As for the problem with Pony Club, it's the same problem as in schools and everywhere else. There are a few kids and parents who are prepared to muck and help out and learn and make sure everyone has a good time, there are a few parents whose children can do no wrong (in their eyes) and feel no-one else has the right to hand out the discipline and standards that are so sadly lacking and that they have failed to instil in their children.

There's a lot of truth right there. I'm 17 and I still feel old whenever I go to shows. I always have something to complain about re: spoiled brats on perfect ponies and general welfare.

I don't think I've ever seen a kid come out of the ring and dismount straight away, unless it's to get on another pony.

Hey, unfortunately it is not just the kids who throw strops and tantrums, a lot of the time it is "the fond mummy brigade" who because they bought their darling daughter a mega expensive jumping machine, expect dsi g daughter to win - the fact that darling daughter can't ride at all doesn't seem to cross mummies mind! :( :(

It's not just the youth, and not all youth are like that. Lots are, but so too are lots of adults.

:(

BUT I did see a girl ride appallingly at a show not long ago, and her pony stopped (he was pretty honest, had jumped half the course despite her mouth jabbing and digging of spurs) but simply could make it through total lack of impulsion or freedom to do his job. She fell off and stood up, with her reins in one hand, faced him and repeatedly yanked on his mouth hard maybe 5-6 times whilst shouting profanities and waving her other hand and crop :( Hand I not had my hands full tacking up my own horse I would have gone to the stewards and reported it, but they (and the judges) had all seen it anyway and nothing was said. :( :(

Don't want them lazy gobshites protecting my country thanks! :D

I hate seeing people using horses as viewing platforms, I get tired lugging myself round some days :D so why should I expect my horse to? The first thing I do is get off, losen girth and run up my stirrups - all my horses have seemed very glad that Im back on the floor :D

no because husband would probably rip the telly off the wall in annoyance at these people.
katie price gets on my nerves.

I dont know why i watch it either. it makes me laugh when its on but not cause its funny its just...rediculous? there really isnt a word to describe some of the yoofs on this programme. I too dislike kaie price shes all talk and no knickers (i mean trousers woops):p shes constantly going on about how the paps hound her 24/7 yet she always puts herself willingly to places and situations where shes gonna be papped. that gets on my nerves a bit.

I really agree with you. I am 16 however have grown up around some very well respected horsemen and women who instilled all these values such as dismounting and running up stirrups before I even had a pony to ride.

I used to PC but do not now for various reasons but when I did camp our stable management consisted of learning how to put a tail bandage on. Now, OK you need to be careful with how tight it is etc but the other 4 girls in my ride didn't know how to put one on at all. 2 of them replied "What is the point of having a groom if I had to do it myself?" and the other 2 said "I'm always in bed whilst mother gets them ready to go out"

Now I'm sorry but I have horses on the principle that has always been taught to me: If you want a pony then you have to look after it

i like people to be able to string a sentence together.
as for NS - i agree, if they are no good they will get shot - more oxygen for someone else!

OK - girding my limbs and wading into the breach!

I have TWO teenage girls. Yes, they are mine and I maybe biased. BUT. I am sick to the back teeth of teenagers/yoofs being slagged off by people who don't have kids of their own or are making sweeping generalizations.

Both my girls (ages 15 and 13) know how to conduct themselves in public, have respect for other people and their belongings and how to treat animals with kindness and dignity. Em (my 15-year-old) who shares Kali with me would no more smack, beat, hit, deliberately yank him - or any other horse come to that - in the mouth than fly to the moon.

Thanks to my daughters' friends (horsey and otherwise) I have had the pleasure of the company of many perfectly lovely teenage yoofs - and I must say that I find that the spoiled brats you describe are in the minority.

Young people often have a bad rep - and I've found pretty much all of my girls' friends to be funny, polite, clever and good fun to be with.

Where do you think all the nice adults in the world come from? Sprung full grown from a patch of cabbages?

Give the majority of the yoof of today a break. Please.

Absolutely, but to be fair, I didn't say this trend of poor horsemanship afflicted the whole population - this was simply what I observed at a local show. When I was 15 I was all of the things you just mentioned - funny, polite, clever and good fun (and modest) - but there were still plenty of spoilt brats around, throwing tantrums when the pony didn't win.

To be honest, I don't think I have seen many adults do that either! Whilst I don't advocate sitting on a pony between classes for hours, I don't see a problem with riding back to the horsebox or trailer before dismounting - I don't quite see the necessity for an immediate dismount at the gate of the ring!

And I do agree with PolarSkye that there are lots of good, conscientious kids about, plus I don't think that things were that much better when I was young - I remember witnessing children jumping the same pony over the practice jump for hours, for example.

We have 3 young girls at our yard, 2 are sisters aged 11 and 13 and the other girls is aged 12.

The two sisters take great care of their NF pony, ride him considerately and do as much as they are able towards his daily care. The mother also rides and has done for years.

The 12 years old makes her mum bring in, brush and tack up her pony. She gallops it round and round the manege stopping at intervals for juice or food ( all of which the remnants get chucked over the arena side) or to generally just moan about the other girls, or her aching leg etc etc. She has very little to do with the daily care of her horse and when her bridle gets dirty her mother throws it away and buys her another one as she doesn't know how to clean tack. Saddle has never been clean by them!!! Parents are know all, know nothing types with a bit of money. No wonder the child is obnoxious.

Yes, there are some horrible kids out there but often the products of horrible parents. My daughter is now 22 and had horses all her life. She knows her stuff and cares for her horse very well. We went through the pony club but you get all types there too!

DQ - thanks, I think, but - not sure how to take that . . . were you being (ahem) snarky?

My original point was that most of the "rest of the population" are also delightful.

Supernanny I am not ;).
