Nothing more than a grumble about house buying.

The horse is now on a share so half livery costs from here on, I drive a 12 yr old Ford so no luxury there, my boyfriend treats me to a holiday every year so what a champ he is - saving is such a nice plan and very rewarding but hells bells, it takes so long and I want a deposit for a house now now now now!! I want my own place and it's so frustrating not having loads of spare cash to stash.

I'm sure a second job is a grand idea but honestly I work full time already and nobody should have to resort to working another job to taxed at 20% so may as well not bother! I don't want a country mansion - a garden shed would to be fair! I should have got out there looting last week and sold all the stuff - i'd have a deposit now!! :D

I'm very lucky as my parents left to Ireland and so I live in the house they left behind. Get my rent at a lovely discount and save as much as I can which you would usually spend on rent

I feel your pain! Hate paying out livery all the time, would love to have just a little space for me and my horses, and really not fussy about what it is... but noticing you are also in Yorkshire, we are at least lucky in where we live that prices are vaguely okay and a lote more affordable than parts of the SE,so I still reckons there's hope!

I Know your pain but...

... a second job isn't as bad as it seems.

I got a second job Sept last year at a restaurant doing just a couple of shifts a week. I made enough tips to live off, and most of the money from my 'proper' job could be saved. It enabled me to pay off my credit card and buy my gg in about 7-8 months :D

Horsemadsarah - there is a Tesco Extra at the top of my road and I do muse about applying for a Friday evening/Saturday morning job.

I guess i'm lucky that I don't have any debts at all - I don't even own a credit card! I'm very much if I haven't got it, I can't spend it, hence no credit card. Sadly, the same philosophy is never go to apply to a mortgage!! I'm also rather jovial that i've just passed my management certificate in my chosen profession so can at least look for another job in which i'll use it and get paid more money.

Trojanpony - it is the saving grace that prices are cheaper in Yorkshire although all the new builds I quite like (I live in one at the minute and they are so well insulated its like a woolly jumper, but wouldn't be hell bent on buying one) seems to have gone beserk with "Shared Equity".

Come on mortgage people & house prices - cut a girl some slack! Failing that, I'll become a stripper for 6months and i'll be able to buy a whole street! :D

One of the most important things for getting a mortgage with ease is a savings history. I tried to get a mortgage for the house I live in and despite having paid rent for 15years without fail I was not allowed a mortgage because I had no savings history.

Luckily a lovely uncle in USA loaned me the money to buy the house. I banked the money I usually paid in rent and eventually made the most of the change in exchange rate, got a mortgage and paid back my uncle.

With the savings history it was no problem.

A second job is a pain but if it gives you the means to get your house then go for it. Send in a tax return at the end of the financial year and you may get some back.

Well, could you reduce outgoings in other areas? Find cheaper lodgings, go back to parents perhaps?

What you cut out can make a huge difference!

I lived in a caravan once in my horses field. It was freeeeeeezing in wnter, and in summer it flooded and I nearly floated away. My friends were horrified but you know, I was alone, no costs but me & the nags. I paid off my debts and saved a few quid. Haven't bought a house yet but at least I'm not woken up by horses making the caravan lean by scratching on it!

tally_ho - you make me laugh! A friend of mine lives in her horse truck in her paddocks - she would rather have the horses than spend all her funds on a house.

I sometimes think I should do the same but then I look at all my stuff and wonder what the hell I'd do with it all!

Currently unemployed and broke as I have grazing and mortgage to pay before I get a share. I buy the less expensive ranges of foods, and perk them up with herbs and spices. Biscuits, sweets etc are now treats only.

I look for the two for less dollars and buy those instead of just one. I plan my meals so that I can buy meats in bulk, make up a batch of something like spagetti bolognaise, split it into portions and freeze the excess, great for the weeks when I've paid power bills and the like - also helps me lose weight too. Check the baargain bins for damaged packages or just out of date foods - generally they are fine.

Feed horses on straights - you will save heaps this way.
