Lots of mud, lots of filthy horses.
The best and easiest way to remove caked on mud from these filthy beasts is to buy six stainless steel pot scourers, unravel them and plait them into a wadge and use that to remove the mud.
The horses do not mind it at all even on the ticklish bits, whether they are clipped or not and it really does remove the mud without wearing out.
