he's about 18 months old, what would you be doing with him?

He's fine to lead, tie up(not tried without a haynet), he's been wormed, getting better with having his feet messed with and less stressy about legs handled. Had saddle on and girthed up, been leant over etc. Not bothered! But can be nervous/wary.
He's also had a rug on for size a couple times.
Is there anything specific you'd be doing with him ??
Next spring we'll be getting a man used to backing youngsters to do long reining work out on roads etc etc

my filly is about the same age. she gets handled most days- she is rugged, and is coming in at nights now- as the weather is not nice and her field companion is a wimp!

willow has been bridled, and boxed and been to a show... been bathed etc. i basically just do everything with her that i would with any other horse... except ride/lunge etc!

willow has not had a saddle on- i wont bother with that untill next year some time... and i certainly wouldnt lean over her at this stage... she's too wee! ;)

just general day to day handling. :)

Ah so we are on the right path!
Just to clarify, when I say lean over him, I stand next to him keep both my feet on the ground and put my arms over his back and 'push down' a little bit to gauge reacion. of which there is none! :p:p i don't lean right over with feet off the floor as i realise that is what it sounds like i meant.. :)

i used to walk my youngster out with my friend on her so she got used to the sights and sounds of the road and forest tracks with the comfort of another horse. did wonders for my fitness!!!!!!! really helped when i eventually hacked out on top as she was not phased by anything and i was very confident as i knew she had seen it allbefore.

have to say he is looking better, how tall is he now? looks like he has grown a bit....not bad for a freebie!!!!!!:D

My welsh D is 18 months old too. He is well handled and is getting alot better with his feet. I too put my arms all over him and frequently get him used to me being around him. He will tie up but gets a bit impatient. He walks up to the local livery yard to have his feet done, about 5 mins along a quiet lane which does him good leading wise.
No inhand shows as yet - hoping he drops his testicle or gets cut/has op early spring, whichever happens soon before we venture out
Plans for next year are inhand stuff to local shows in the trailer but mostly left to be a baby until his 3rd summer/autumn, than may start a bit of long reining and ground work with him.

the only things (extra to your list) that I can really think of are;
Boxing up and unloading and then some short journeys.
Getting him used to boots like brushing boots particularly if his legs have been an small tentative area in the past though obviously do this when you think he is ready you don't want to create an issue and end up having to redo the work you have done.
Bathing, with a sponge first, (weather permitting!) and then a hosepipe :) (which are very scary snakes in my new 2yos opinion she just had a hosepipe used for the first time today to wash her muddy feet and there was a lot of snorting going on but she was a very good girl :) ).
My vet also recommended getting the dentist out just for a check up so that she gets used to it at an early age (she'd been pretty much unhandled until I bought her so lots of basic baby things).
She's had her jabs and was fab for them so injections is another thing checked off for us.
Maybe mane pulling? just doing a touch to get the little one used to it.
The only other things Ive really done are on a long lead rope getting her to walk in small circles around me a few times in the menage to get used to different scenarios to the yard and also preparing her for long reining and lungeing. I remember reading in a young horse handling book that its a good idea to lead them from the right hand side sometimes so that its not different for them when you then try to do it to lunge.
Good luck with him he's beautiful :)
Making her stand still without me being right next to her/ holding her just for manners really and getting her used to voice commands.
