Hi - this is a quick how much - for anyone who can bear to do it

Some of you might know that the horse I have on loan was offered to me for sale (which I turned down - but now I need to think about finding him a new home either loan or sale).

I'd be interested to hear what you guys think he might be worth - I have my own idea - and the owner is getting back to me with what he wants for him as well...

ok - so he is a 15.3hh ID x TB bay gelding who is 16 yrs old. His grandsire is King of Diamonds. And his sire is Glidawn Diamond.

He has done eventing (Pre-Nov) - always double clear. Is an excellent showjumper, never stops. BUT... dressage is not his strongest point. He suffers from sweet itch and has one capped hock. Can be strong when jumping and not 100% in traffic (fine with cars, but not keen on farm machinery!). Good to box/ shoe/clip/catch etc.

I was thinking about £3k but didn't take in the bit about sweetitch, so probably more like £2500 maybe less.

How bad is he in traffic - if a tractor came past what would he do?

I'd say £1500-£1800 at most - bearing in mind his age, sweetitch etc.

Hmmm - tough one. I've had horses I'd call good in traffic get bouncy and nervous at big things, but if he behaves dangerously fairly regularly then that would knock his price down a lot.

Yes - I know what you mean xspiralx - my old horse was very good in traffic - but would bounce if something really big and noisy came by...

I guess I just mean he isn't 100% in traffic... He's only really been dangerous once and that lorry was pretty scary... the rest of the time he is more just a little spooky with big things... I just wouldn't want people to think he was safe for a novice in traffic.

I'd say around the 2.5k mark (3k with tack etc.). Sweetich is not a reason to mark a horse's value down (I think anyway). Sounds as if a competent rider is needed. Where is it based, I do know someone looking for something to have some fun on - although age may be against it........

This horse is an old horse and anyone taking him on is taking a big risk. At that age the owner should be looking at giving him away for a nominal sum to find him a good home for the rest of his natutral life. I should know as I took on a 16 year old four years ago and it has cost me a fortune in veterinary bills etc.

I wouldn't pay anymore than £1000 him (not including tack) only due to age really and the couple of issues he has. Maybe £1500 including tack.

Hello! You mentionned he might be available for loan.....do you think that is likely? He sounds very like my OH's mare (also a KoD grandchild) and actually looks like her aswell. She is off work for an indefinate period with an undiagnosed injury atm, so we might be looking for a replacement - not sure if temporary/perm at the mo though, would be happy to sign up to 6 months minimum or something.... Would he live out? Would they let him move away from Suffolk? PM me if you prefer!
In terms of value, I'd say definately no more than £2k I'm afraid, as our girl is younger (12 when we got her), she does dressage (competant novice level), has evented and SJ (BSJA), team chased all last winter up to 3@6 solid/4' hedges, no sweet itch, not strong to jump (only to hunt!) and no capped hock etc, and she was £3500 which I though was a fair price. She is not what I'd call a novice ride by any stretch out hacking and can be a bit dodgy with tractors etc, but my mum could ride her in the school, she is super well behaved! So I think £2.5k would possibly be a bit unrealistic.
