I know the value of this mare of mine but I have come up with a plan and would like to hear your thoughts on it please.

I am considering selling one of my horses that I previously had never considered selling. She was my original trail horse that I bought to get the business started. She is the best little horse at taking beginner people out as she knows her job perfectly.

Well I no longer offer trail riding and sold most of my trail horses, but this mare was special so I said I would never advertise her but if someone who was very kind and caring came along I would think about selling her to them. Well someone sort of has.

My mare is a sorrel Grade Quarter Horse, pretty horse with a perfect white blaze and 3 white socks and light mane and tail. She is 10 years old, excellent feet, very careful on the trails, built like a little tank and works like a tank too, will go through absolutely anything! Rivers, bridges, heavy traffic on a busy County Road, ploughs through dense forests making new trails etc etc, do not have her batting an eyelid; absolutely nothing stops this girl whilst her remaining perfectly safe for any rider, young or old, light or heavy.

Anyway, one of my old boarders who sold her horse last year and has been looking for a much quieter one, hasn't found one but still comes riding up here once in a while. Well I have been thinking that she would give my mare the most perfect home.

The woman is a good rider, although is somewhat nervous on younger horses but give her an older horse and she is great and pretty competent. She has her own house with acreage (only about 10 acres but enough for having a horse on) and she lives on a busy County Road so hasn't been able to find a horse which will live alone, doesn't bother about traffic and is calm enough for her to not feel worried about riding out - this is my mare to a tee!

So my plan is this, perhaps I should sell my mare to her? The mare is worth about 2,500; she's not a big money-spinner, just a good trail horse. Now what I want to know is, what figure would you put on her to sell to this woman? I would be very negotiable however this woman was interested in buying my big palomino QH gelding that I sold to the hay customer who came and fell in love with him instantly (and practically bought him then and there) and offered me 5K so I took it. The woman really liked this horse but didn't have quite that amount of money, she was looking more in the 3-4K ballpark and I didn't have any other horses for this low figure. Anyway I know her budget, but for this mare in particular, I would sell for a song - but it has to be a reasonable song as I won't sell for less than I paid for the mare.

So? What sum do you think I should offer this mare to her for? Thank you.

If I advertised her at 3 grand, she'd be gone in a day, of that I have no doubts whatsoever, but I don't want to sell her for a lot of money because I want to have a buy back clause.....so I want her to go for a fair bit less than 2.5K.

Offer her up at 3400....she may try and knock you..to say 3200..then you have a nice sale..buyer thinks she has a bargain!!!

happy chappys all round methinks...

Lol! She'd buy her at that, most people would buy her at that, but see post above.

Yes but I need a figure in my head as to what to offer her at, Lol!! That's the figure I don't have yet.

Do these buy back clauses stand up in Canada? A friend of mine sold her pony for £2,500 a month ago, (worth a lot more) went to a solicitor and she was told the buy back clauses aren't worth the paper they are written on.. as you have accepted money for the horse (mind it could have been a dodgy solicitor

oh right...

i can't be bothered with all that "buy back" sh1te, TBH....

I either sell something..or it stays.....

No, the buy back clauses are never worth the paper they're written on.

I'd offer her for sale to this lady for what you paid for her, and appeal to her better nature regarding selling her back. That way, she's got a bargain, and you havent lost money on the mare if she never sells her back.

Presumably the mare has paid for herself, so to speak, up till now? I.e., You've made back the money you've spent on her keep through hiring her out as a trail horse (or more...)? If so, then why not sell her for the price you paid for her.

You are obviously very attached to her and wouldn't have seen any money if you'd kept her as you had planned, so this seems like a good solution.

Hope this lady realises what a good friend you are!

PMSL!! Neither can I normally, but I am sentimental about this mare in particular. I rarely ride her actually, but she was the first trail horse I bought over 3 years ago so I am protective over her

Ah no I wouldn't have it drawn up, although yes I believe they do still stand up over here. I'd just say to her that I would like first refusal if she ever wants to sell her, which would be doubtful unless she had financial problems. It would just be a verbal thing.

That was what I was sort of thinking actually.

Maybe a little more as when I bought her she was advertised for 2.5K but I got in there quickly and bid her in the bollox and she accepted!

I think if I whopped on a couple of hundred more, she'd still be under 2K and I'd be in profit (on paper).

An alternative is to lease her, so you get paid a small sum for every year the lady has her, and you still retain ownership, so no problem about 'buy back' clauses.

they are if written and witnessed corectly....

Yes, she has well and truly made her money for me. I only took my trail horses out for one hour in any 24 hour period, however this mare did about 97% of all my trail rides, so she made me thousands more than I paid for her.

I am attached to her, not too sure why really as I barely ride her, although I have been riding her much more this past couple of weeks and she is terrific!! I don't need anymore personal horses though as I already have way too many for one person.

She's a really really lovely person, much nicer than me
tongue.gif
, that's why I'd like to give her a good deal because I know just how well she will look after my little girl and she's likely to keep her forever, which is what I really want for the horse.

Zigzag; if I was replying to this thread - what you said, is EXACTLY what I would have said too!!
grin.gif

I'd rather sell her, so that the woman actually feels like she belongs to her; I'm really not keen on loaning or leasing and I'm not usually keen on buy-backs either, but this mare is special.

We were in a similar position a few years ago when my husband gave up riding and we were looking for a new home for his mare. Like yours she owed us nothing. He sold her to a friend who had fallen in love with her for a lot less than he could of got, because we knew the home would be perfect, she would be loved and kept for life, which she was, unfortunately she died last year. I would ask yourself what the least is you will take for your mare but don't undervalue her, if this lady is prepare and able to pay 4000, ask that but be prepared to negoiate if this is the home you want for your horse. Sorry if this is garbled, been relaxing with a couple of glasses of wine.

Thank you for that PW2; I know she would likely pay this amount, the trouble comes if at any point in time she didn't want her anymore; I can easily lay my hands on 1.5K but it would be more difficult to lay my hands on 4K in a hurry; well I could lay my hands on it, but I would have to sacrifice something.

Do you think 1,800 would be a good price? She does know this mare and she has ridden her and loved her, and as I say I'd imagine she's pay more but I don't want her to pay more. Anyway I'm going to call her tomorrow and see what she thinks so would 1,800 be acceptable to you guys, do you think?

I think if you are happy with that amount, and like you say makes it easy for you to buy her back if need be, go for it. Chances are you will never need to buy her back as this lady sounds ideal.

ETA Liking PW2 makes me sound a bit cool

Yes it looks good - PW2

I'm happy with this amount, was going to say 1,500 but thought that extra 300 might just come in handy, and it still sounds really cheap.

I haven't read any of the other replies so apologise if I am repeating but despite how much the mare is worth (and I wouldn't have a clue in Canada) but it would concern me that the mare will be living on her own especially as she has been used to living with a lot of other horses.

Again I apologise if this has already been discussed.

She has a couple of sheep, so the mare wouldn't totally be alone and there are a lot of horses in the area where she lives. To be honest, with this mare, I don't think she would bother about living alone, she's a pretty well balanced girl.

What about her taking two? Maybe that would be an option and I do have another horse which she could have.

Lease her to the woman for $3000 on the understanding that when she has finished with her she will buy her back at x amount less so much for deprecation value as she gets older each year, so you still keep control of her future.

Once sold, an item is sold and the buyer can do what they like, including selling on to a higher price as they have title of the item for sale, but a lease or hire is different.

Or sell her for $5000 knowing you cannot guarantee her future, but have had a good profit if you cannot buy her back.

She does sound a star though and worth her weight in gold.

Thank you for your suggestions, they are good and the money does tempt me, but I really want her to feel like the horse really belongs to her and that she won't feel that I still own her. She's a good lady, I can't ever imagine her doing the nasty on me.

The mare is a star, she really is; she's still quite quirky though so she isn't a deadbeat or a plod-along.

What about if I held a share in the mare?
