Shortly about to go out for walk with in laws little springer. For whatever reason her recall at the mo is non existent, so she'll be on lead. But she pulls! So hard that she walks on her hind legs. An quick tips to get all 4s on the ground? She also spins in circles... So any walking tips much wanted.

Don't have my dog here, and I'm not used to pulling dogs!

If you walk with the dog on your left, then she stays there by refusing to have lead contact, and the application of the outside of your left foot! :wink3:

The things that I could come and think of, I hope that you will think that something of it sounds useful, are:

You can try calming signals, such as placing yourself so that she can see your face, look back towards her face (without staring in her eyes), and then slowly blink, open your eyes, and blink again (do it as "ultraslow" as you can) some times.
Another calming signal is to make all your movements as slowly as possible, while you're taking deep breaths, slowly in and out, to help keeping yourself calm, and not become affected of her excitement. Because if you can't keep calm, she won't understand that that is because she is misbehaving, she will only understand that you're also not calm. Which she then can use as a reason for not calming down herself...

And/or, if she pulls, you can either stop, and wait for her to get down on all four again before you start walking again (this may take quite some time and be quite tiring for your arms), or you can change direction, turning around, will both not allow her to continue in the direction she was pulling, and will probably get her down on all four again. However, both of these options may lead to that the walk hypothetically could take place on a rather small area.

Keep her too occupied with having to follow you, so that she doesn't have time to pull. Don't just walk straight forward, as in between one end of a street to the other end of it, without walk in zigzag, between trees/bushes/cars/public waste containers/park benches/lamp posts or whatever is available. Walk around a single tree, as if it had been a carousel. Walk in a figure eight around two cars. Climb over park benches... As much as possible, do whatever you can think of, which doesn't involve just walking straight forward.

You could try giving her a little massage, to help her relax and calm down.

Good luck and merry Christmas.

Tomorrow, when shops are open again, try to buy a GenCon. It is a lead that goes over the nose and round the head of the dog, and prevents them from pulling. If they walk nicely the reward is the nose and head bit releases a litle, if they pull, it remains tight.
It isn't cruel but it is effective!!! It's a very useful interim tool when dealing with dogs that haven't been trained to walk properly to heel.http://gencon-allin1.co.uk
