Just wondered if anyone could give me a little hand with my NVQ questions!

I have to know,

what are the requirements for ventilation, lights and fittings in a stable?

and...

what are your responsibilites for maintaining health and safety when preparing a stables for horses?

annddd...

describe two potential hazards that may be present in stabling and state how these can be minimised.

Bloody stupid questions... any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not stupid questions at all, do you want horses in your care to be kept in a way that minimises potential effects on their health (and your own come to that) or not? With a bit of thought they should be very easy questions. If you can't think of the answers I suggest you go and do some research whether online, in a decent stable management book or ask your tutors.

hey hey steady on... i came here looking for help with my work not a lecture on how to do it thankyou. And i wasnt refering to the questions themselves being stupid, just the work itself being rather tedious.
I have infact researched it, but you do come across a lot of helpful posters on this forum and i knew there'd be people more than willing to help me and so was exploring both options.

If you didnt want to help, then why did you bother to post? There was no need for the attitude.

This should provide you with guidelines for minimum standards in equine care. Also the DEFRA website is a great place to find requirements and codes of practise (and they produce documents which make good references).

"describe two potential hazards that may be present in stabling and state how these can be minimised."

Lots of examples available but think about exposed nails/sharp metal edges, exposed glass in windows/ electrical cables for lighting...

Really?

Bloody stupid questions

That's how it sounded to me. If you'd come on saying I'm trying to do this, have had a read or whatever and I'm still stuck, then you'd have got help from me. As it is, the tone of your first post did nothing to make me want to help you.

Best way to do this would be to have a picture of your perfect stabble in your mind, lokk around the outside and then look around the inside - what sort of things would you like to see in them. Then visualise the worst case scenario of stabling and do the same but looking at all the bad things.
My list would look like this (not in any particular order)
Situation
Design
Construction - Inc materials, flooring
Safety - electrics, water, suitablilty of materials used
Weatherproofing
Ventilation
Electrics
Practicalities - water, electric provisioning etc, door catches, ties rings & storage
If you visualose on it this way you will easily find the answers you are looking for.
Hope this helps.

Sounds like some of the replies are very useful sources. I would imagine that in stabling etc some of the main methods of minimising H&S risks are similar to construction ie regular maintenance, daily checks, checking competency of contractors on site (eg members of recognised quality assurance societies), use of correct protective equipment when appropriate, qualified personnel..........

And the most important, don't allow our previous bimbo mare anywhere near your yard, she could injure herself in the box on fresh air! ;)

I see you have all the info you need now, but I just wanted to post in defence of the OP, I remember doing my NVQ questions and they are EXTREMELY tedious, you almost end up repeating yourself on every question! So I feel your pain!

Any more questions just ask, I have my whole folder to hand :-) (how do I do instant smilies?!)
