A Little Legacy Update

Well our little girl is just fantastic! She is 18 days old now and is just as much a delight today as she was the moment she popped out. She's an absolute hit with all of my friends as she is super-friendly to everyone. Her cavorting around the field just brings huge smiles to everyone's face.

But at the end of every very busy day in a little one's life.......comes sleep.

She is always guarded by her superb Aunties.....I honestly couldn't have wished for better caretakers, particularly Golden who just idolises Legacy.

You know, someone else said that to me today too.....and he has big horses!

She seemed huge when she was born then she seemed small once she was up and moving; her mother is 12.2hh and her father is 15hh. She has grown loads in the couple of weeks she's been alive though and is getting bigger, more muscley and more grey by the day.

To be honest she isn't too much smaller than her mother right now - god knows how she is going to be able to reach under to get to those teats; mind you my little mare is very obliging and she lifts her leg to let Legacy get in to suckle.

That is just the sweetest thing! Cant wait until my mares have their foals, will be my first foals ever!! Very excited but very nervous

I was wondering how Legacy was doing. She has grown a huge amount, I can't believe how much she has changed!
How many Aunties does she have with her now? What sort of Mum is Cloud proving to be? Very protective or quite laid back?
 
Seeing that pics bought tears to my eyes - when I was 13, we bred my mum's arab. I used to spend hours curled up in the paddock with a book using Pollyanna as a pillow or her with her head in my lap.

We had a very close bond - only broken when she had to be pts at a year as she was born with part of the brain missing - something that occurs in some arabs.

She looks to be a beautiful filly and going to be a big girl when older.
 

Enfys; Cloud is the ultimate "truly wonderful" Mother. She is very laid back with it all; she looks after Legacy but has never been a possessive mare. She is perfectly happy to leave Legacy with Kate and Golden while she goes off and grazes. Legacy is also perfectly happy being left and is often away across the other side of the little paddock on her own talking to her Daddy or one of the adoring geldings through the fence, whilst her Mother is in the big field munching away on the grass. Golden never leaves whichever field that Legacy is in although she is often way over the other side - I think she is going to be a great Mother when her time is due....although I am pretty worried about Golden as I have this awful feeling she is carrying twins

Legacy is a real spunky little thing and is never scared of anything - she will go right up to the adjoining field and have 9 big geldings all huddling around her and they don't faze her one little bit.

She only has 2 Aunties at the moment; Golden and Kate who were part of that herd before Legacy came along. I took Ezzy out in the end and moved him in with the geldings; he has settled in there fine and is getting along with them but he tends to hang around the fence as he really wants to go back in with Cloud. I will probably let him in a month's time when Legacy is a bit bigger. He would never hurt her intentionally but I could never forgive myself if he bopped her out of the way by mistake, so I erred on the side of caution.

What is Lola like as a Mother? And is she living on her own with Isabella? Will you be putting her in with other horses or does she normally live alone anyway?

she's very protective and seems to be a bit of a worrier. I wonder if this has something to do with Isabella's little walkabout at a few hours old though. Lola also talks, all the time. Poor baby will grow into a stroppy teenager from being nagged at every two minutes.

At the moment they are alone, I certainly wouldn't put Lola in with Ruby who is a massive bully and would try to steal the foal I think, Fergus is too boisterous and also a bit of a bully so he's a no-no as well. Perhaps Robin, who is very gentle and was Lola's field mate through the winter. I would like to put them out with at least one other horse, it's best for the foal I think, and makes them less dependent on their dam for company.

Right now they are stabled at night because we have no foal/coyote proof fencing and I would never forgive myself if there was a preventable accident, no point tempting fate. Anyway, they are all in from 10.30am-5pm-ish as the flies here drive them crazy, the foal goes out (dressing gown and wellies job) when I get up about 5.30am then back out until dark in the evening, so they have a fair bit of field time.
Going shopping for some wire today, keeping in mind what you told me about your experiences Thankyou.
