Today as of the nice weather, we had a nice hack to the common, :D
now on the common, i was told by the county council, that you can ride anywhere on the common, bridlepaths are only recommended as they are safer for horses, and if you were to go off the horse route then you have to move to the side for the walkers instead of them moving for you.
So we had got to the woods, had done a few jumps and had then stood on the path talking, my friend had walked down the path and was just cooling him down, when a dog shot out the bush scared the horse and sent him galloping down the path towards us, he stopped at the end as we knew he would.
The owner of the dog came towards us then, he came over and told us we shouldnt be on this path as it was not a horse route etc and especially not galloping?!, the girl who his dog had spooked, then got angry and said well if it wasnt for your dog i wouldnt have been galloping, he then got very angry at us and told us he was going to report us.
We said fine, and that is when we got called cocky, and my friend is never rude to anyone, but she was really upset that he had spooked her then blamed us, she said it wasnt our fault he shouted at her a bit more and that is when he started to walk away and said when you can spell that then i will listen to you, we asked what word, and got the reply of "right!" and my friend goes R-I-G-H-T. we told her numerous times to be quiet as ignoring people like this is usually the best thing to do. but then he got his phone out and called the police. We headed off home, with the girl a bit shaken that her horse had taken off with her, and havnt heard anything since, but i doubt the police would even get involved!
Now many of you probably think we were in the wrong, as we are teenagers, so probably dont believe this is what happened, we are young but not rude to anyone, we were just girls having a nice hack out! which may be hard to believe! but its often happened that the adults blame us, as i have fallen off before as adog came running at me, he then blamed me for not warning him that my dog is scared of horses, but one she isnt scared she spooked at it darting out the bush, and two i didnt see him.
and everytime something has happened, people have found a way to blame us...

You are TEENAGERS!!!!!, well it was obviously your fault and the adult was certainly in the right, i suggest you go and hand yourself in now!!!:D

Seriously though dont worry the guy sounds like a dick!

The world is full of odd angry people and seems like you came across one today.

People who behave like that normally have 'problems' (no friends, crap job, jealous etc) sounds like he was venting his frustrations with the world on you. So just ignore and if the police come, chat the whole thing through with them.

You just have to try and be above it (easier said than done) and if you see him again, just say hello and move on!

Tbh I would have probably completely lost it with him and I don't tend to be rude to people either!! He really cant have a go at you for the horse spooking when it was his dog that spooked it in the first place, as the dog was obviously out of control aswell! I hate people that can't just mind their own business if you had permission from the council to be there i wouldn't worry too much.

I know!
we are never rude to people, its not like we gallop all over the common every chance we get and run people over LOL.
most of the time we walk and trot, and thank people a lot when they move for us!
its just us teenagers having such a bad name i think :') he was about 60/70 and looked like he had nothing better to be doing ;)

dont worry about it some people are just ignorant to horses.
a friend of mine was out riding her horse last year, he could be a bit spooky so she had her oh walking with her. the horse then started to spook at something in the bush and was jogging sideways facing the bush (like they do). she put her hand up to stop the traffic while she got him past the scary bush. but the car driver had other ideas and went to pass her on the wrong side of the road. this freaked the horse out more and the horse ended up on the bonnet of the car.
the man then got out of the car and started screaming at my friend who was very upset and he didnt stop until she phoned us up on the yard and we went up to meet her and he got confronted by adults. he then phoned the police and tried to get her to pay for the damages to his car but it backfired as he got charged with dangerous driving. best thing about it he had two kids in the back of the car

He might have thought he was in the right as commons dont have horseriding rights (even under CROW legislation) unless specifically designated for 'wider access; the default access is foot only.

So it might be worth speaking to the council to see if a board can go up with details of the common eg a map but also outlining whats permitted on the common, ie including horseriding across it.

Try to put git face out of your mind, if he's prepared to waste police time on something which would only ever be (even if it existed) a civil offence, and not only that, one which he had no right to enforce, not being the landowner/administrator, then he might find himself being spoken to for wasting police time.

Next time try to restrain the very tempting sarcasm tho, it loses the sympathy of officialdom which would be a pity given you werent doing anything wrong!

Like many people, he probably moans about horses on the roads and then moans about horses off the roads too....wonder where he would like them to go. If he says 'Only on your own land' then that ought to apply to his errant dog too!

nowt queerer than folk!

Wouldnt worry about it - the police probably passed it off as a timewaster.

Someone stopped us on a hack once (roads) and said "did you know that all horsey people end up looking like horses? Like that Princess Anne one..."

Yep.

I suspect he wasn't really calling the police - and even if he did, I doubt they would do anything. I used to work in a police control room and if someone had phoned up about this they would have been advised that it was not a police matter, and I suspect the log would have been closed something along the following lines "FATWOB" - stands for "******* All to do with Old Bill" - probably doesn't any more - was a lot of years ago that I worked for them, in the days before Political Correctness!!!

Yeah i'd say he was bluffing, your friend sounds like she belittled him as he was trying to get smart, he didn't like how she showed him up, so bluffed to make you go away!

Now, being teenagers, your going to get the blame for EVERYTHING! It's part of the package of growing up, it's only when you reach 21, that YOU can blame teens! Best thing is, nobody questions it ;)

But seriously though, what do the council say about walking dogs? I'm not familiar with the law on that. I know some places, not everywhere, dogs have to be kept on leads? If they do have to be kept on, it's another one for your friend :p I'll stop teasing, i would get quite pumped up in that situation myself and i'm not a confrontational type, it's bad that some people can ignite that in a person!

Dog owners have to keep their dogs under control in public places. This is, I'm fairly sure, regardless of whether you have or have not a right to hack your horses there.

As the dog clearly was NOT under control (ie ignored any command if given), should you see him and the dog again you can just remind him of that fact.

Ditto

TBH Th epolice have got far more important things to do with there time than deal with this guy. No crime was committed.. so he needs get a very small step ladder and get over himself...........

Don't worry, the chances are the police will just log his report as a malicious call and do precisely nothing about it. I once got into a right old row with a bloke who was running his dog on a football pitch (there are a number of pitches on a large area of suburban common land and everyone rides there) and he had a right old go at me about my horse cutting the ground up and leaving divots which would trip up footballers when the ground was frozen. Well I pointed out that having played in womens leagues myself, no decent referee would allow play on a frozen pitch (H and S rules), I wasn't riding across the pitch anyway, just around the edges, and as a player I'd far rather trip over a divot than slide face down in a pile of dog poo which HIS dog was more than likely to do. He then theatened to call the police, and I said fine by me considering GMP mounted division exercise their horses all over the same fields!!

Yeah don't worry about it, you always meet some grumpusses - I try just ignore it, then it's only the complainer that's getting bothered by it!

I got chased by a golfer, brandishing his club at me as - on following HIS directions to avoid the golf course - I somehow managed to end up on a fairway....ahem...with steed having to releive himself....WHOOPS!!! lol
