I have just been nabbed by someone on the yard who tells me she is looking after a Rhodesian Ridgeback which lives on my old yard whilst his owner is away. She asked me what the dog was like, and every single thing I told her, she promptly said 'oh no, he isnt like that at all'

The RR does not get enough attention when he is at home, so he is well known in the area for straying, sheep worrying (killed several lambs last year), fighting with other dogs, he has bitten male visitors to the yard and guards 'his area' quite strongly.

All of which I would expect from a bored, unoccupied guarding breed.

The person I was talking to even said that RR's are not guarding breeds, they are gundogs

And when I told her about the above, she contradicted me every time on the basis that she has been looking after him for about 5 days

no no no, didnt u know that cocker spaniels are guarding breeds and RR's are gun dogs?!
DUH!!! I thought EVERYONE knew that!!!! (and u call yourself a doggy person! BAH!)

Totally joking dont kill me!

TWERP! (her!)
Shame about the poor dog though!

Actually I have just realised that I have been wrong all this time, obviously greyhounds are actually gundogs too

It amazes me that anyone will leave their dog in her care, but unfortunately owner of dog does not give a stuff - he phoned her at 3pm, and dropped the dog off at 3.15pm with no lead, no care instructions, didnt even see the house where the dog would be living

Takes all sorts I suppose

gah! some people!

Yes I hear greyhounds make fab gundogs!!!
Sure my border collie would be a fabulous guard dog you know! With all that licking and rolling around he does, any burglar would **** their pants! MWAHAHAHA!

Am having a giggle at your post Splotchy...not because of the dog who I would love to take of this prats hands..... but because if someone fired a gun near Matty we wouldn't see her for a month!!

Oz (JRT) has been known to bring me the floating, blotted corpse of a moor hen from a pond.........He also brings me half dead rats..........does that make him a gundog/retriever??

People like the lady looking after the RR at the minute really get up my nose!

It is one thing to have your beliefs about, well anything, but why ask somebody their opinion if you wont listen and are hell bent on contradicting them?
confused.gif
Unless perhaps she was looking for some sort of congratulation for turning around the behaviour of a well known canine fiend?

I feel soirry for the dog, between his owner and his carer he really doesn't have much hope

This is exactly what I thought!! Our RR hides under the table if a firework goes off within a 5 mile radius of the house.... not quite a gun dog!

QR if that dog lived around here, it would be dead already.

I am very surprised it isnt CC - I was waiting for the day to come...

RRs were originally bred for Lion Hunting, so technically they aren't Guarding Breeds

But she does sound like a pleb!!

Obviously that makes them gundogs then Henmeister

According to my most recently bought books over all sorts of breed, the origin was a guard and hunting dog from the Khoikhoi people, there is writing and photos describing/showing their dogs with the ridge from sometime between 1850 and 1860. Then the Boer people came and crossed their dogs with the Khoikhoi people dogs and amongst the results of those crosses, the man who "created" the breed found his foundation dogs/bitches.

By the way, I doubt the Khoikhoi people hunted a lot with rifles before the Europeans came, so I presume they killed their prey with things that didn't go *bang*. According to Wikipedia the dogs were rarely used to hunt lions because it usually was like a suicide mission for the dogs but the breed should have the courage(/stupidity?) to face a lion and make it possible for the hunter to kill the lion.
