A minute's not a long time...

depends on the rules. can you jump each fence any direction a maximum of twice?

is there an optional joker fence that you can jump during the round or afterwards?

or is it a normal course but each fence adds up?

Cut & pasted from the schedule...

"aim of the competition is to accumulate the highest number of points in a 60 second period by jumping each of 12 fences up to a maximum of twice with different points value according to their height, with a joker fence at the maximum height (for which points are deducted if knocked down.) The rider chooses the order of jumps they want to jump and points are only gained by clearing fences."

done a few of these and they are good fun. Practice jumping fences at an angle and after tight turns etc, as you would for a jump off. Then at the show itself allow plenty of time to walk the course and come up with the course that will give you the most points.

I'm sure the winner will be somebody who jumps and clears the joker, so unless you are just doing it for fun, i would reccomend doing the joker. It will make it a bit of a lottery as not clearing it will probably drop you down the finishing order, but to be in with a chance i think you need to go for it.

Daughter did her first one in December & won

Here's the vid ....

Her plan was to do the biggest first (which also happened to be next to the timing lights) & take a route that could fit as many big ones as possible as he's not fast but can turn. She also planned to finish near the timing lights too which worked out. She won by a lot too!!

Good luck xx

I always try to construct a following course often jumping fences on angles to eliminate as many tight turns as possible as they do waste time. unless the jumps are set up in your favour you will probably only be able to jump about 10-15 fences max, aka not all of them. You will have to start and finish through the timing equipment to it is sensible to have your first fence as close to that as possible. I would normally pick a flowing course of 6 or 7 fences which i can then repeat with ease which will include the joker and as many of the higher scoring fences as possible. Put the joker early on (but not first!) so you know if all goes to plan you will get to jump it twice.

I will also then have a back up plan in case I knock a fence down although normally I will design my 'course' round those 6 or 7 fences so that I can easily miss out a fence if knocked.

thats how I do it too. always using the top 6 scoring fences and jumping them twice on a flowing course. including the joker early on.

Echo the back up plan, I've seen too many people waste time (and points) by not having an alternative if one gets knocked. Also, and this may sound obvious, don't go round or inside anything, even the very low scoring fences can make a difference

Good luck, they are loads of fun!!
