If you hadn't jumped for a while but were looking at new horses, would you feel you had to jump whilst viewing? We're still looking for a horse for my husband and he's not jumped for a good 4-5 months now and i'm not really supposed to be jumping due to my knee injury. Got a couple of possible horses to see and just wondering if anyones been to view but not actually jumped, even if thats going to be part of what you want the horse to do??

As long as you can see it jump and have some involvement in what is jumped such as seeing it over something you build that may be relevant to what you need to do later, then I see no problem, you should get a good idea from watching and a feel of how it is in every other way. Possibly get the OH to just pop a tiny x pole if you need to.
Just do not accept the sellers building what they want to show you, if you want to see more ask.

i bought a horse for dressage, but also wanted to beable to give it a bit of change with jumping

when i viewed it i only put it over some trotting poles as i didnt feel confident enough to jump it then and there, but i did get sent 3 videos of it jumping 3'6 courses and was happy from viewing these that once i got to know the horse that i could also jump it.
can you get a video of a course? or may be view it jumping? and id defo put it over some trotting poles - that can tell you alot about a horse!

If you don't feel comfortable jumping it don't do it. I went to view a horse a while ago while I was recovering from a knee injury and stupidly decided I would pop it over a few jump. It did not end well!

As long as you see it jumping up to the level at which your husband would wish to once he is back into the swing of things then if I were you I would be happy. Of course you could always take an experienced friend with you who would be willing to jump it and report back to have the opinion of someone you trust?

I wouldn't worry too much. Although I like jumping it takes me a while to get my confidence jumping a strange horse and would happily explain that to a seller.

I recently viewed a horse that I popped over a 2ft log on a hack, and a x pole in the school. The owner then put up the jumps and showed me what the horse could do.

I'd certainly try and take someone of similar standard to your OH to try jumping the horse for you, so you can see how s/he behaves jumping for a stranger.

TBH if I like it the horse I'd probably explain the situation to the owner (so they didn't think I was a complete muppet) and have a little pop, he's going to have to do a first jump with him/her at some point, be a shame to get home and find they don't get on at all!

As long as you see it jumped then I don't see a problem , in the last 4 years we have brought 2 ponies for the kids a 14hh and 14-3hh , the first was the 14hh and we watched her being jumped round a course of jumps then my son had a ride but no jumping as he was very novice at the time then I had a little ride (I'm not very big) and popped over a jump but 2nd pony I had to trust my son in doing all the riding as I had just had a cataract op (at the age of 42:eek:) and lucky I trusted my instinct and we now have a lovely new pony .

Thanks, have seen him jump and he looks nice and steady into a fence, obviously will see him jump when we view too. And i'll more than likely take him over a cross pole to see how he feels. But probably won't be more than that! Just wondered other peoples views on it.
