Pointless post really but just wanted to tell you all about my plucky friend Sue. From the age of 11- 15 Sue taught me to jump on a muddy patch on the edge of her field, using worn poles and rusty barrels. Despite me being a bit of a rubbish showjumper she perserved with me and allowed me to ride her pony at the local riding club where I still compete today on my own horses although now I do 'sensible safe dressage' instead! She lived on site in a caravan with her partner for 20+ years. A couple of years ago her partner died and following a pretty traumatic time (which involved her 30 year + pony collapsing and dying in her field and her trailing being stolen a few feet from where she was sleeping) she decided to up and move to France in March this year taking her dog and three horses with her, driving them all the way herself in her new trailer. It wasn't long before I got a letter from her telling me she'd got herself not only a part time job but lots of new friends and offers of more grazing for her horses if she wanted it free of charge. She's been doing her cottage up and sorting out her land gradually trimming her fields and putting up new fencing since she moved in and in the summer went on day rides and picnics with her new found friends enjoying the long hot summer days splashing in their swimming pools.
So just when I thought life couldn't get any better for her you can imagine my surprise when yesterday I got a Xmas card from her telling me that not only has she has met a french man and they have loads in common and get on like a house on fire, but he has bought her a young horse for her to break in and eventually accompany him on endurance rides together. I couldn't be more happier for her, I am delighted she had the guts to go out there and build a new life for herself and her animals in a foreign country. She is about 58 so I think she has done a marvelous job and can't wait to go and visit her and see how good the life is out there for myself. Who knows - that might be me in a few years time!
