I keep my girls on a working farm on DIY livery. I love it. There are 4 liveries inc me and we have 7 horses between us and the YO has a few too.
I have not been to the yard now for a week now as have had swine flu, i know my girls are being looked after and are fine, my friend has been looking after them and me too!, she has done lots of chemiist trips for me and dropping stuff of for me at my door etc.
Now she is due to go away next week and im due to look after her 2 for her. Now fingers crossed ill be ok by then but...
ive already been contacted to say the other girls will look after my 2 and her 2 if im still not well and not to worry!! Phew one less thing to stress about!!
So the point is this...... me and my girls feel loved at our yard!!! How nice is that??
Thanks guys i will be up and about soon!!

Its great isnt it. Im in the same boat Swine Flu, so not been able to check on my two for over a week but I know they are being looked after by the other liveries.

Good to have such kind and helpful friends.

Hope you feel better soon, its nice to hear of nice yards with nice people. Most yards I know always have at least one trouble maker resident !!!

Also on a lovely livery yard. There are 12 owners, 13 horses.
Everyone gets along, there are people from allwalks of life (millionaire, down to me on 12k lol) and the wealth of experience of knowledge between us is fantastic.

The support i was given with Ted was phenomenal and Im now getting the same level of support.

SEE livery yards arnt that bad, you just got to find a good un.

I keep my horse on a small diy yard. Day to day it is pleasant enough but sadly in my hour of need no help was forthcoming, at all. I had an bad accident earlier in the year and have been crocked ever since. Not ONE person offered to help me (broken bones). Thankfully an old friend stepped in and has been helping me ever since. I am a person who offers readily to help others so I feel like I have had a huge punch in the guts. I realise most people have very busy lives but several of the other DIY's have time on their hands, don't work at all or only for few hours and their lives are NOT hectic by any means.

Ahhh thats pants, im always the 1st to offer and the last to accept help!! lol i hate admitting i cant cope when im poorly and need help! Ah well you live and learn dont you eh? are you on a big yard? whereabouts are you in the country?

I too am at a lovely livery yard! There's 14 horses between 10 liveries (+ two sharers) plus the yard owner who is as much part of the gang as the rest of us, there is never any bitchiness and we all ask and give advice freely - it's always welcome. I'm aware I don't know everything about horses and so are the others, but together we manage pretty well! We range from 21 to 70 in age and the horses go from a 11hh Sec A broodmare (YO's) to a 16.3 intermediate eventer via everything else in between!

A lot of us all go off to competitions together in convoy and we're always ready to help each other out - one took mine to the vet for me last night (ride and lead - it's only 2 mins down the road) and I met them there as I would not have been able to get there in time from work, she then went for a hack while he was seen to and met me on the way back to take the horse back so I could take the car!

We have rotas for putting the boys out in the winter and we will always keep an eye on all the horses as we walk through the field. Due to the hours I work I am usually last up so I do a quick check of each of them before leaving, knowing that other people will have done the same in the morning and earlier in the afternoon. The YO is always ready to help but never interferes unless asked, and he husband is great at removing twisted or dangerously loose shoes!

Mine's been lame on and off for about 2 months and every friday I get bombarded with text messages to say that so and so is free on sat/sun if I want to ride etc. The other day I rode 3 as I didn't want to turn down any offers! I also do the same when my boy is fit if someone is looking for a ride for any reason and I'm tied up.

On Sunday, I was fence judging all day (8am - 7pm) at a ODE and although a lot of the yard were going and had horses to plait and clean, every single one of them said they had checked my boy and he was fine - I hadn't asked anyone to do this as I was planning on going to see him on the way home, but they all did and then went out of their way at the event to find me and tell me. They knew I was worried about him as his lameness isn't improving so knew I would appreciate an update - especially as he seems to have turned a corner in the last few days (touch wood!)

So livery yards can be great places even with very diverse people both in terms of their backgrounds and what they do with their horses!

Archiesmummy, that is horrible, i think they should be ashamed of themselves.

Keltic- I am with you on this one. The first thing i thought when you said you were is was 'oh no, what about the girls.'
It is nice to be on a yard where people step in and help in your hour of need.
You know all the stuff that happened to me last year and the whole yard pitched in and looked after my 2. They also visited me in hospital and at home afterwards. I don't know what I would have done without them.
We also have a rota in the winter for bringing in at night so we are not all up twice a day every day.
