Hi
well this is my first Event report so go easy on me, all encouragment appreciated...

My second visit to Eden Valley, first was last year when I entered the BE80, when I was a complete prat getting everything wrong that I could possibly do (eg went wrong in the dressage, nearly missed a fence and had to circle it in the XC.....) so this year was determined to make a better showing and not make a complete a*se of myself and show up poor long suffering horsey....

This time entered the BE90 on the saturday. So first the dressage. Which is normally my worst phase (even when I dont forget the test!) Horsey is perfectly capably of doing a nice test (when not ridden by a numpty) however I have spent 2 years in lessons working on persuading him that he does not stick his nose in the air for the entire test. This is achievable in a lesson with instructor barking instructions but in the excitement of an event with so much to goggle at I have never succeeded in getting him to relax his back and be supple, to remember he has back legs as well as front legs (normally forgets and leaves them behind and trips up over them) and to not poke nose in air. However something weird has been happening over the past few weeks where even outside a lesson with no one to bark instructions at me I can actually get him to start to work nicely... Well that is all and good, I thought, but in the excitement of an event it will never happen..... well lessons seem to have paid off and he went beautifully (apart from tripping up a few strides in after entering at A) and his free walk on a long rein where he took the opportunity for a sneaky poke head up to have a look around...) judge gave really nice summing up comments about the quality of his paces so am absolutely thrilled - really feel like I have turned a corner.

Next the SJ - had walked the course on fri night and thought I would not get over jump 5 (? - apologies if mis-remember fence numbers) (the one after the hair pin bend to the left) however they had moved 5 and 6 across the arena to make the corner less tight. We knocked fence 3 down, which was my fault for over revving the engine and arriving on a half stride, then just scrambled over next fence, went around the tight corner in trot trying to untangle legs... then got over the next jump and managed to complete the course without further incident. Not much style but never mind, just glad to get thro to XC.

XC - I had walked the course twice the night before in order to avoid making the same mistakes as last year. Also made copious notes as I went along (the pony club kids behind me probably thought that was hilarious) which I left at home by mistake.... Set off, got over the fences 1 and 2, was a bit tentative going around the bend from 2 to fence 3 then carried on over the bank and next jump, flew the steeplechase, got to fence 7 and my right contact lens flew out. I would like some praise at this point however as I did not swear. Right eye is better eye, so still had some binocular vision but a bit blurred. Carried on over the next few fences, flew over the open ditch that I had been a bit worried about, put my foot down going across the top of the field, into the woods and over the trakehner , back down the hill over the tree trunk and the milk churns, around a right bend towards the water and nearly ran over a gang of people who appeared right infront of me (still didn't swear!)...........through water and over last few jumps to finish!

Overall was delighted - first outing of the season, horsey didn't run out of puff and was a superstar.

So here is my question - had 8 time faults in the XC - please can anyone remember what was the optimum time? It didn't feel particularly slow, though with contact lens problems I might have been going a bit more tentatively without realising. Would like to know so if anyone knows please can you tell me. Thanks for reading!

Lovely report, well done, you've obviously enjoyed yourself :D

The optimum time was 4.45 (if you look on the BDWP website it's always at the top of each section result ;))

There were a lot of time pens in most sections, I had 3.6 on a horse which doesn't normally have them unless it's really wet & hilly which cost me top 3 finish but it was the first run and I didn't particularly push to be fair. It was a little twisty with not a lot of places to cut corners or make time up so I wouldn't be too worried early on in the season, once you've done a couple more you'll get more of a feel for the pace needed I'm sure, and also see places where you can make up some time, hope that helps

Good luck with the next one :D

Lovely report and well done for not panicking after your contact lens fell out (although i did snorkle into my tea a little when I read it as I had visions of you trying to catch an invisible item before it blowing away - obs that didn't happen tho!!)

Sounds like a great start to the season, your 8 time pens is as Mrs Pink put - 4.45, you get 0.4 penalties for every second over the OT. It isn't much and taking the odd pull can really add time. I picked up 8 time too :D

where are you heading next?

keep up with the reports too it was really good :)

Well done sounds like a terrific improvement in a year! If the course was hilly they often make the time feel tighter: you underestimate how much the terrain affects your speed. I would just remember to kick away from the fences a bit more, don't try to approach them any faster: if you save a second or two per fence that way, you'll soon get rid of the TPs. Well done :)

good advice - will remember that one myself :D

hi guys
thanks for all your comments and advice - that is much appreciated.

hi Measles - Unbelievably the same thing happened re contact lens in SJ at Skipton last year! I swore blind after that I was going to get eyes lasered but am too chicken (and too skint). I could actually see the lens half stuck to my eye for half a second before it blew away.

I dont have any pics I'm afraid - I did have a headcam on (my own one, not hired) but unfortunately cant post video online as didnt complete the section of the agreement.

Thanks for the info Mrs Pink - I didn't know the optimum time was on BWDP - am obviously very unobservant so thanks for letting me know - will know for next time. Like you said it is early in the season and I wasn't sure how fit we were so not so bad taking it steady I guess.

Hi Artic Fox - (glad I gave you a laugh!) i probably slowed down in places without realising - hubby who was watching at the finish thought I slowed down near the end after coming down over the last hill and over the tree trunk - there seemed to be lots of jumps scattered about at that point and I didnt want to jump a BE80 backwards or anything like that due to semi-blindness.

I think you're right, Table Dancer, I probably didnt push up the first big hill just after lens blew out as was probably a bit distracted. Pushing on after each jump is very good tip - thanks for that - was just thinking I didnt want to apporahc jumps any faster.

Glad you enjoyed my report - yes I really enjoyed it, horsey was briliant and was good confidence boost.

Next stop is Northallerton - will have to walk the course on the day for that one so hope I have no memory lapses - hoping for boring event report with no disappearing lenses or nearly run over spectators....!

Great report!! I have NO idea how you managed to get round with only one lens. It's bound to have slowed you down a little.

Sounds like a brilliant outcome all in all anyway, and a massive improvement upon last year. Well done!

Pics next time please :D :p

Thank you Becky! Yes was a big relief after last year!

OK I'll tell hubby that on top of other duties he now has to take pics! - he'll like that.....

Actually come to think of it, if I can find official photography pics I will post links to some pics!

Allow me , as one contact lens wearer to another, enlighten you.

I have an eye problem and need to wear 2 lenses in each eye, without these t
little babies I could no longer go XC. Stops the wind drying out your eyes and prevents you from losing lenses.

I have had the odd comment but generally by stupid people who don't know I have had surgery and I do not wear the goggle to look cool but for safety to allow me to see.

The are an essential bit of kit for lens wearers, IMHO

As a fellow lenses wearer I can sympathise!! Never happened before but now I'm seriously considering Smurf's goggles:p.

Actually I am too!! It had never occured to me it may be a problem. I always carry spare pirs of contacts and solutions when I go eventing but of course that would be damn all use if it happened mid round

And sorry to hijack OP - sounds like you had a great seasonal debut apart from the lenses :)

If anyone is thinking about goggles make sure you do not go for the tinted version as they are very dangerous for XC as they do not allow your eyes to react quickly enough when jumping from light to shade etc.

Also, I have tried almost every pair on the market, the Kropp ones don't seem to work as they are one size fits all and they are really big, if you wear a decent crash hat (as we all do) then the hat comes almost to your eye brows so there is too little room for the goggles to sit above your eyes.

Uvex are definitely the best and don't steam up. Very comfy too, I wear mine at home for fast work or hacking on our very windy hill

Very interesting Smurf - was worried about visibility. I get really hacked off with swimming goggles steaming up so worried same might happen xc.

Hi Smurf
thanks for the link - I used to have goggles but gave them away - I used to wear glasses but having done RC XC in rain, splattered on outside, misted up on inside, unable to see a thing - that's why I changed to contacts! Guess I am going to have to try something tho as its happened twice now

Lol you have made me laugh! I got contact lenses for the first time yesterday and plan to wear them XC on sunday, now you have given me something else to worry about lol.
Glad the event went well! Look forward to your next report :).
