A post on the BE forum

I think it is a shame BE are so precious about the use of helmet cams full stop. I have my own so certainly wouldn't pay to hire one, and even if you get permission from BE then all the footage becomes the property of BE, you are not allowed to post it on the Internet, and in fact you can't do anything with it except watch it back at home (presumably alone!). God knows why you can't watch them on the day 'as per competition rules' because if you've got a mate with a camcorder then you can watch that to your hearts content, post it on the web etc, and I don't really understand why helmet cams are any different. Really weird.

i think BE need to flag that up quick and fast then because the people who are doing the hire a web cam don't make a point of telling people you need permission first, i picked up one of their leaflets at aske and thought what a good idea. somebody could be eliminated, it could be the white breeches syndrome all over again!

Really? Crikey, that's all a bit much! Haven't they seen how much good publicity the Henny ones get?
I have one, haven't used it yet, wanted to ask you how you affix it SC, have you sliced holes in your silk to attach it? i really like my silk, it's a bit precious... not really sure i want to cut a hole in it, but don't want to risk losing snazzy hatcam either!

Think the hatcams are on elastic straps that you put around your hat, like those reflective bands. DHB is quite right, saw loads of folk with them on at Cumwhinton and Hexham. Eric Waggot seemed to be doing some advertising for them as he wore one for every round....I can see why BE are suspicious of them....

Really, that is ridiculous. What is the difference between a hatcam, a video and a photo? If you have already ridden the round how will watching the video afterwards improve your score?

Sorry, to clarify, I presume the hire people are doing it with BE permission, but when I and I think Santa Claus have asked in the past we got told that basically we could not do a thing with the footage and it became the property of BE. Really odd, god knows why!

As for how I keep mine on - it came with loads of fixing mounts, so if I were so inclined I could sticky one to my helmet, but I just use the band (like a headtorch one) and stick the silk over the top - there's a pic on my FB of me on the beige one K if you want to have a look.

Is this what BE came back with when you contacted them for "application form for permission"? I was under the impression it would be to sign a disclaimer saying it was for personal use (not commercial) and that you could basically use it for your own blog/FB etc?

I was really desperate to use it on Hopalong when/if we ever get back to doing anything. :( :( :(

OH does a little car racing and you have to sign a Disclaimer for use of video equiptment. At some tracks they are really strict about it and when the car is scrutineered you have to produce the form etc. A lot of people kicked up a fuss about it when they were first introduced and they were informed it was to do with copyright and that footage could show their staff or facilities in an unsatisfactory light, but they weren't that bothered about stuff appearing on You Tube and such, so I presume BE are on the same guidelines which means blogs etc. should be OK :cool:

He came with me to Cumwhinton and was looking at the ones for hire and then spent the whole afternoon trying to work out how to fit his to my head, the words hammer and nail were used so he was promptly dispatched to the front seat of the wagon and told to stay there until further notice ;)

As SpottedCat says, let's hope BE don't get too carried away with this

As far as I am aware, there is no provision in law which enables BE to claim the copyright on helmet cam footage automatically - I can only think that the permission form riders sign contains an assignment of the copyright from the rider to BE. What I don't get is how BE are able to hold riders over a barrel by saying that they can't have the permission if they don't make the assignment.

Is there something in the BE rules which prevents riders from wearing the cameras without permission? If so, riders using helmet cams seem to be being treated very unfairly by BE in my opinion: potentially eliminated if using without permission; forced to hand over copyright if obtaining the necessary permission. I can see why BE might want to retain control over permission for wearing helmet cams, but the basis for them claiming ownership of the resulting footage seems very very dodgy indeed to me, if indeed that is what is happening.

It would be interesting to see a copy of the permission form if anyone has one they can post?

I'm not a BE member, but I hope someone on here who is will take this up with ERA or BE direct.

As has been picked up already I have been posting my helmet-cam videos with blog online this season at www.equispy.com
Getting permission to do this however took ages. I needed a signed letter from the chief exec at BE and have to inform them in advance of all events and classes I am competing in. Not sure why as has been asked it is such a big deal especially as everyone videos events and puts it on youtube anyway with no limitations.
I think their main concern is that I am not gaining commerically or financially at their expense. Once I confirmed I was not selling or charging to watch the footage they were happy.
Hope the footage is useful for people, over time I think it will be a useful refernce point for event courses and at worst entertaining when I jumped the owlhole at Aston on the weekend all on my own... also excuse my language, would like to say I am normally swearng at myself and not the horse!

Can't fiind any blogs or footage from that link Eventerchick.

We got my stepson one for Xmas, but keep forgetting to use it!

Might have known it would be about making money with BE!

Didnt they attach one to Paul Tapner riding the course at Badminton this year? I know they did with one rider i was sure it was him.

Oh and you can buy them on Ebay for £25.00

I agree though as new rider to BE I would like to see how the course is ridden and looks before i consider entering
