As he has had vet calls outs for:

A suspected Nail in frog - 5mm of nail found, he was treated and given antibiotics 'just in case' (he wasn't even in pain or lame!)
Mild Colic - due to being put in a field of dockleaves and buttercups when he was meant to be on starvation(him and 3 other horses gorged themselves ill! Other horses had worse symptoms and were fine with owner care - my sharer called vet on YO advice).
Resp issues - poss due to doc leaves, the flock of pigeons that lives in the stables, or the horse that he was sharing with who had an cough/breathing issue that the vet couldn't figure out why! (either way it only occurred at this yard)
(These reasons are why I dislike yards with a call vet first THEN owner policy!)

And now the headshaking.

So that is all in his vet records - so I guess that head issues, breathing issues, colic and legs will all be excluded, as they wont look at the little things - like the fact he wasn't actually in pain or lame or the fact the nail only penetrated like 5mm of DEAD frog that was cut away by the vet!

So is there any point in me having any insurance other then 3rd party? If he is v ill, and requires a lot of proper drugs to keep him happy I wouldn't chose that, he would be PTS. I made that decision well before I bought him. He also would be buried in my parents field.

The one big liability is that he is ridden by a 15yr old girl currently.

So is there any point in me getting proper insurance? Will the BHS gold just suffice do you think?

Insurance exclusions are not permanent unless its a permanent condition. For example - my horse had antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs for mud fever so I now have an exclusion on mud fever. However, the exclusion will be lifted if my vet writes a letter to state the horse has had no mud fever for a year after the date of the last bout. It is the same for the solar abcess she had. The tendon injury is slightly different although with a full vet's examination and statement that the horse has been sound an in full work for the last year then the exclusion will be lessened. This is with PetPlan.

So in a word, yes it probably is worth shopping around for what you will get with different insurers.

Try shopping around and see what you can get.

The thing with insurance is that companies don't run policies for your benefit - its to make them money. The general idea is that for most companies you will pay them more than they pay you. You may find that your premiums would be so high, or your exclusions so great, that for a year (hopefully an injury free year!) you might be better off putting the money you would have spent on insurance into a seperate "vets fees" fund somewhere and see what happens. (Do bear in mind if you do have a major injury or something your fund will in now way be enough to cover the fees. In your place I would want to know I could afford it if I had to - but that would just be me.)

But don't give up the public liability element! (Although your BHS gold has that).
