A question about a hoof bleed please

When the TB mare came back from her exercising this afternoon I noticed fresh blood trickling from her hind hoof, I washed it off and at first thought it was the coronary band, perhaps she had struck herself, no lameness, but after I washed it off I discovered it was actually a small cut to the hoof about a cm down from the white line.. any ideas?
 
Do you mean below the coronary band? ETA sorry see you said not that, but I can't picture where you mean? If it's bleeding, it's presumably heel bulb?

Coronet band and heels are like our fingers or our face... it has a very good blood supply, so even a small cut can produce an alarming amount of blood. Best to give it a good wash in saline or hibiscrub if you have it, and if possible cover and keep clean until it scabs over.

If it's a puncture wound, that's a bit different (is tetanus up to date?)
 
She has probably trodden on herself. I had a horse do that once and punch quite a big hole. Keep it clean, it will actually produce knobbly horn and fill in the gap. Horn does not only grow down from the coronet, it grows outwards from the back of the laminae as well.

Thanks, it's not very big and was scrubbed (which produced a 2nd batch of bleeding) so hopefully any dirt flushed out. X
