Hi, I currently feed my boy a low sugar chaff, Baileys Lo-Cal balancer and MSM supplement. I am looking to remove his back shoes soon so wanted to make sure that I was feeding the right things for hoof health. I like the look of Progressive Earths Pro Balance supplement and it seems to have a good write up on here.

My question is, if I feed the pro balance at the level they recommend can I ditch the Baileys lo-cal? Or is it better just to stick with the lo-cal and not bother with pro-balance?

Thanks for your help.

I would swap the lo cal with bro balance. I have fed pro balance since i got my boy and the new growth on his feet is much better quality!

Ditto ditch lo cal for pro balance.

Check the white label for exact ingredients in " low sugar chaff" as some "lite" versions still contain molasses and/or are high in sugars ( just lower than their normal if that makes sense?).

Also noticed that the Lo Cal contains added iron, which would be a disaster zone for me with my grazing. Apparently most UK grazing has excess iron, and this affects the uptake of copper and zinc, so even if copper and zinc are in the feed, the horse can't use them because of the excess iron. Most feed manufacturers base their ingredients on "what a horse needs every day" - sure, they need iron - but if they're getting 15 times as much as they need from their grazing, adding more in a balancer is not a great idea ;) And the knock on lowered levels of copper and zinc can have a real negative impact on hoof health. That's why I tend to choose one of the supplements that is low-iron - such as Pro Balance :)

Hi Trish. Good to see a post about GG hope he is on the mend.

Definately go with the Pro-Balance. I started DD on the Pro-Hoof a year ago and his feet have never been better. I have removed his back shoes on 2 occasions previously when they were crumbling so badly I could not keep shoes on. He adapted very well and easily to no shoes behind. Start off with walks in hand on the road to build up his strength and progress from there. He will tell you how his feet are feeling. Good luck!

I switched from Lo Cal and Suregow to Pro Balance with Kwikbeet for all. I have to say their feet are rock hard and a much better shape. I swear the youngster had slight flaring on the non-Pro Balance diet. The new girl's white line has really tightened up and her feet are looking great now, she was on a bit of a rubbish diet in her old home.
