At the minute mine is out 24/7. The yard manager is there all day so I only go up at night to groom/ride. In the winter or if the weather turned and he came in I would go twice - once in the morning to turn out and muck out, then at night to ride etc.
Twice in the winter, once in the summer. In winter I go up at half 6, turn out, muck out, put haynet up, and then YO brings him in for me at about 10. Then I go back at about 4pm, groom, ride, feed, put to bed. In summer, I go up in the morning, bring him in, groom, ride, groom off, clean tack etc then feed and chuck him out again (out 24/7). Yard has DIY/Part/Full livery, YO lives on site with family and yard has staff so he's checked on more during the day.
In the winter when they're in I go up before work and muck out, turn out, do water and haynets for later. Then if I'm at work the YM gets them in at midday and I go after work/school to muck out, hay and feed for the night. On days when I'm not at work I do the midday getting in. the kids sometimes ride them after school.
Now that they're out all the time I go once a day after school. The kids ride and then we poo-pick the field. Or if they don't ride, we still go up and check them over and poo-pick the field.
in winter i go up at 6am muck out & turn out then my friend brings in @ lunch. i sometimes go up to ride after but as his stable 'companion' wont stay on yard without him i've had problems with riding over the winter.
if it was just me sorting him (no friend) i'd put out first thing & my dad would bring in around 11am & i'd ride in the evening.
summer i go up 1 or 2 times a day to (if on podgy side) bring in (days), lunge, ride, put out muck out. when out 24/7 i go up once in the morning to remove muzzle, put suncream/fly mask on. & to the opposite in the evening & probably ride him
in winter my sister goes up in the morning turns out and sometimes mucks out so i go after work. in summer i go down once a day to check she is ok and give her a tea before bed time!!.....at the moment with her in stud i dont need to go down at all and when i pop down i stay clean as dont need to go near the horses!!!! the owners live on site and are always bobbing around the yard/fields checking everthin ok as they have horses out as well!!
Once or Twice a day depending if it's my turn to bring in/turn out as share morning duties with another livery. If I'm working I pay someone to do her.
Once a day in the summer as he is out 24x7. I go in the morning and get everything done.
In winter twice a day but do everything in the morning and jst yank him out of the field and do a rug change in the evening. Even the evening feed is done in the morning and left in his stable so i just check he still has his legs and fetch him in.
My routine is the same in the summer and winter as all my horses live out 24/7 whether or not they are young, old, clipped, hunting, eventing etc. I go up about 4.30pm and on the way I decide if I'm riding or just feeding. If I'm riding then I bring whoever I want to ride down from the field and my dad comes to the yard and drives up to the field with feeds for the others. If I'm not riding then I make up all the feeds and drive them up to the field. Whilst they're eating I wander round and check they've all got 4 legs, adjust wonky rugs and make sure the unrugged ponios are warm enough. I leave the yard anywhere between 6 and 9 depending on how long I spend nattering to my friend
Just now I'm going up twice a day because I'm not working and trying to ride twice a day to get him less fat. Once I'm working it'll just be once a day. In winter I go up twice - about half 6 to chuck him out and about half 8 at night to muck out, bring in etc.
Twice a day every day no matter the season, a lot can happen in 24 hours of not checking them.
In the winter I turn out before work at 7am. Back in the evening to muck out etc. Mike comes over and gets him in (or YM does) and schools him in the day and then turns him out again. I then get him in about 4 to 4.30 (after work) and rug/feed/hay etc.
In the summer I bring him in for the day before work as he hates the hot weather and the flies and also turns into the mad hippo horse. Again Mike comes over and schools him. In the evening I turn him out (about 4.30/5). Then I muck out and do hay/water and feed for the morning.
Weekends he is either competing or I hack him out but the routine is pretty much the same as the above.
Am I overdoing it?
I go up on my way to work (7.30 am), to check all her legs are still attached and working etc, and on my way home from work, to give a small feed (mainly cortaflex and Naf Magic) and ride, or say hello depending on if I'm going to ride or not.
I go up twice a day regardless, I believe you should check them twice a day as you never know what could happen.
In the summer she is out 24/7 but if there is too much grass or now there is not enough grass in her field she will come in for a couple of hours.
I will ride and feed in the morning and in the evening feed her again and check her over.
In the winter she is in at night and out during the day so I go down in the morning to exercise and muck out and in the evening I bring her in and put her to bed.
However for most of the winter I am at Uni so mum is in charge of her.
There are several people at my yard who barely come down at all, some won't come down for a few days and expect other people to let them know if something is wrong with their horse
Alternate between once and twice a day with a friend on livery. One morning I will bring both in, next morning friend does. GO down in evening regardless, horses are in in day and out at night. Seems to work well.
In winter I go up 3 or 4 times a day, morning muck out / feed/ exercise etc, lunch T/O, mid afternoon to muck out,, and evening to bring in and feed.
Summer.... I go up once a day. He's right inbetween houses where he's kept an eye on, and I don't need to be constantly checking him. he's within easy walking distance so if I feel like it i'll pop up and give him a fuss later in the evening.
I see summer as time off for me, no early morning and evening rushes. suits me to a tee. Winter is too long.
Mine live out 24/7. I go up early morning just to check they are ok ( i'm lucky they are only 100 yard from my house) and in the evening either to ride or just to check & give Bobby his supplements.
Had a major panic a few days after we got the new one. She's a TBx & was rugged in the cold weather at the end of May. Overnight the the top trigger clip on her rug broke. The rug slipped back & her leg got caught up in the leg strap. Luckily she escaped with just having the coat riubbed off (phew!)
Once a day in the summer as he's out 24/7. I go in the evenings to check him over, groom him, have lots of cuddles and ride most days. Sometimes pop over in the morning if I have to; went yesterday to put sun cream on his back where his freezemark scabs have just come off. Boyfriend has been this morning to do the same thing. There's people who go down to the yard in the mornings who would call me if anything was wrong.
Twice a day in winter, morning to turn out and make a start on mucking out, evening to fetch in, remove mud, give cuddles.
twice a day at least regardless of the time of year.....! I left my yard at 1pm on Friday and by the time I went back to check at 7pm that evening my TB had been stung by his eye and it was so swollen he couldnt see out of it....! so once a day isnt enough IMO but saying that I am on my own at my yard whereas if you are on a big yard there are usually people about to see if anything bad has happened and can contact you.
i go up twice a day. at the moment my mare and foal are out 24/7 and my other mare is on box rest, so my routine is am: muck out feed, water, groom, check on mare + foal. pm: muck out, feed, groom, water and mess on with foal
i can only get up in the late afternoon/evenings and as I have only had him for two months, I haven't gone through a winter with him yet! however my YM always checks him in the morning and others on my yard always stick their nose in his direction during the day; I do the same fo rhtem if they can't get up in the evening for whatever reason. It works well
Depends on the time of year etc. ATM I go up once, YO brings him in around 10am, he's in for the day then. I go up about 6pm/7pm, ride usually, turn him back out, skip out and do hay for the next day.
In winter when he's in I usually do both ends of the day. TO first thing, ride in evening and muck out. YO normally brings in unless there are others still out there.
