how do you keep their tails clean?
my welshies tail looks like a series of rat tails and she really doenst like it banging off her legs when she walks, she isnt happy about me trying to get the mud off it either, i washed it but then its back the way it was as soon as she goes out

Either get some ready made spray from the saddlers (Mud Away(?)), or put some oil and water in a bottle. When you've washed the tail, put conditioner on, then spray with your concoction, then plait the tail - just one long plait all the way down.

my boys get their tails brushed through before they go out mornings after ive sprayed veggy oil on it, its a bit grim to handle but stops the mud sticking to it.

only issue wee have is thee old boy will try to lick SWA's tail, or his own!! (but the latter is funny to watch)

I brush the tail with lots and lots of conditioner. It does get a bit dread-locky, but if I do that every few days, it's mostly ok.

Reminds me...I need to trim it again...it's dragging on the ground again.

Haha that made me laugh out loud!

I also agree with the wash and then plait the end in one long plait, always did that with my first coblet - then hosed out the end everytime i hosed off the legs, brushed it out, then re plaited it

though best done in daylight it ended up a bit shorter than intended

but did appreciate it hunting the next day.

wash as normall, add whatever oil you like.
then before they go out plait thir tails and tie in a not. always works for our greys
(oh but they do get a wonky tail from the knot)

My 2 cobs have tails that literally touch the ground. 1 is also mega thick (15" at widest). In the winter I plait from the dock down, then fold in half upwards & secure with an elastic band an inch or so below the dock (I recycle the one's the postman drops - they are the only ones big & strong enough!).

Star has a mega thick, white tail that touches the ground.
I wash the tail, put lots of 'shine spray'/mud repellent spray on it, then put it in about 5 plaits, making sure I bring the underneath hair round to the top to stop it getting stained from wee (she has no personal standards.......

). Then I just leave it.
I've got to unplait it, wash it all and re-plait this weekend.....gulp.

A friend of mine has some kind of tail bag which her natives wear out in the field. No idea what they are called though.

Go to tailgator.co.uk and buy a tailbag - black and fold up type.

Wash the tail in the autumn, use some survivor detangler (again from tailgator) to get out the tangles, carefully comb out and plait from bottom of dock. If you have a very thick tail, then do a top plait and a bottom plait. Pop on the tail bag, fold up and forget for two weeks.

Two weeks later, bit more survivor (also conditions) and comb out and replait.

My trad had a black tail that needs to be washed in six sections it is that thick. However, even for showing, I won't wash it again until end of March/April as it stays so clean in the bag.

I also bag his mane and forelock.

The tail grows very fast and stays in great condition.

In summer, I bag the bottom two thirds and leave out the top third so washing and getting ready for a show is easy, plus the tail stays in great condition.

I never take the bag off for work - hence the folded one. You might want to lunge first with it on, just in case but my horses have been fine with them from the start (also use them on the clydesdales).

Yep! I chop my girls tail off to her hocks after the last show of the season. It then has 6 months to grow back before I show her again!

Will have to try baby oil on my mares tail - shes bay but her tail is sooooo horrible and has black gunk in it from her season
