If a horse on a livery yard leaves the yard to go away for skooling, on return to the yard does said horse go into quarantine before returning to the herd or at least stays in their stable for a time, what is the protocol on your yard ? Thanks !

My yard has no rules at all :( easy for me when my boys are away at boarding school, crap for me when anything comes back onto the yard carrying something! They have to be wormed before they go out- other than that nothing!

No, I've never known our yard to implement a quarantine rule unless their was reason to suspect the yard that they have come back from has something to quarantine the horse for?
We have quite a few competition horses that leave to go to shows all over, if there was a quarantine rule they would never come home!!

On my previous yard it was a blood test and isolation until the result was back. That was quite a large yard though and obviously that didn't apply to day trips!

Thankyou, It does surprise me that it seems to be the norm that no kind of quarantine methods are put in place, I'm not talking about going to shows, I'm concerned when a horse has been away for a length of time, and is placed back into normal routine on return, I'm not stupid enough to think that sometimes no matter what you do, things can happen, but shouldn't we at least try to lessen the chance !

I have heard of yards doing that for new horses, and it would make sense if they did it for horses returning from other yards too.

All new horses on our yard are quarantined for two weeks in a separate stable block and a double fenced paddock (so no touching noses) thought that was the norm to be honest, all yards I have been at have had a required quarantine period.

Never been on a yard where they have had any sort of quarantine. Most don't have seem to have enough land or separate stabling to make it viable. Most I've seen is they have to stay in a day or two whilst they are wormed.

i went to see quite a few yards when i was trying to find a place and one place i went to said that the horse has to be in a field etc for a time period. They then showed me a horse that had arrived the day before that was not allowed near other BUT it was on the general yard with others i did not get that at all :confused:

Our yard has no rules.

Ideally the horse would be quarantined as its been in a different environment and been exposed to different bacteria, illnesses etc.

But saying that any time s horse leaves a yard to compete it could be exposed to anything.
Morning different horses congregating in one place

So where do you draw the line?

Nope no rules at mine, rather concerning when there's a horse just come over from france coughing up green custard opposite my boy in our very narrow American barn .....angry doesn't quite cut it at the moment.

I am on a small DIY yard and yes, if a horse goes away to stud, for schooling or stables away for a competition you have to do a weeks isolation on your return. Its not much of an issue as there is a stable with paddock in front and a field, all separate from the main yard.

Great idea, our yard only does it for new arrivals (they had a bad experience years ago with a horse that arrived from a dealers with strangles!)
But where go you draw the line, one of the liveries hunts twice a week, coming into contact with loads of strange horses, probably more chance of picking something up than if you've been to a different yard for a few days & seen all the other horses are healthy.
