Hi i was wondering if anyone could give me any advice please? i am currently on a mission to find my partner a horse and need some advice. He is around 5.9" and weighs roughly 17 stone. As i have only ever had and worked with light framed horses i would like to know what breed would be suitable for carrying this sought of weight ,we are obviously looking for a cob of some discription but not having much dealing with the heavier breeds does anyone have any advice as to what may be suitable. Many thanks!

Clydes/Shires are bred to pull heavy weights not carry heavy weights therefore dont neccersarily have the best conformation for weight carrying.

You should look along the lines of a very well conformed (short coupled) Vanner type with 10" bone, though anything over 9 1/2" bone, if well conformed will probably carry him.

I am heavy & ride two 9" bone 15.2hh's, one is ID x KWPN and the other is Welsh x TB x WB, both cope well even though both are a little long in the back (long backs tend to be weaker).

An RID - or RIDxcob would do it - as long as you went for a relatively stocky one (sadly, a lot of RIDs these days are a little lacking in bone.) Short back is vital in a weight carrier. This chap will mature to carry at LEAST 17-18 stone- he was 2 when this pic was taken and already had 10 inches of bone! He's by my RID stallion out of a TBxPercheron mare.

Short back, plenty of depth, short cannon bones, a broad chest

And no, he's NOT for sale - he's destined to be my husband's next HW hunter (not that he is 17 stone - yet - but if he doesn't lay off the chocolate biscuits .......)
