Need to build back muscle up but horse refuses to lunge goes ok for 5 min then just gallops round and round, rears, bucks, bunnyhops (that's amusing lol) everything but working correctly. Lunging ended badly and then he jumped a 3ft fence to get out the arena! After that he was fine. Lunged as if nothing happened. I've decided I'm not going to lunge anymore, knowing me I'll end up hurt! So is it possible just to ride and build these muscles up instead? I can get him working correctly riding him.
Choc

Lunging is only beneficial if done correctly so if he goes properly ridden it makes more sense to ride him.

Lots of stretching long and low while working properly from behind will really help. Hill work also good for the build up of correct muscles.

That's what I was thinking he's not getting anything out of lunging it takes a long time to get him to behave any by that point we are both fed up! Thanks

Have a search on here for 'the Kerilli way of lungeing'. Helped my boy on the lunge, and helps him stretch long and low, working from behind :) agree though, if you get him working properly while riding, it will build up his muscles and help. Hill work and pole work are fab, and lots of stretching on a circle, and try leg yielding in and out of the circle. Lots of transitions too! xx
